He shows that the function of the parabasis is primarily "intertextual," echoing not only other poets but also the comic poet himself. Hubbard maintains that the parabases of Aristophanes' plays, taken together, form an important autobiographical subtext, which allows readers to trace the poet's career as he wished it to be seen. The poet, in his various struggles with Athenian society, is himself revealed to be a comic hero on a par with many of his protagonists.

Analyzing Aristophanes' plays sequentially through the lens of the parabasis, The Mask of Comedy gives us a new perspective on the significance of his entire dramatic corpus. It will be welcomed by classicists and by comparatists and literary theorists interested in the development of comedy.

About the Author
Joe Topping currently is a professor of analytical chemistry at Towson State University.  He did his post-doc at Iowa State Univeristy in Ames.  At Towson, he has been honored with such awards as the "Outstanding Faculty Award" and the "Faculty Merit Award".  He has written ancillaries for an outstanding text, Atkins - General Chemistry and is heavily involved with the American Chemical Society.  

Kate Denniston is a biochemist in the Biology Dept. of Towson State University.  At Towson, she has been honored with such awards as the "Outstanding Faculty Award" and the "Faculty Merit Award".  Her previous employment record is literally a list of some of the best biochemistry institutions in the world: Univ. of Wisconsin as a post-doc, Georgetown University School of Medicine  as research professor, National Cancer Institute as a Senior Staff Fellow, the Argonee National laboratory in their research program, and as an Invited Instructor by the European Molecular Biology Organization.  She has written for such noteworthy publications as Nature, Science.  

Bob Caret is currently Provost and Executive Vice President of Towson State University and an associate professor of chemistry.  He has written an Organic Chemistry text previously.  Professor Caret's Focus in the textbook is in organic chemistry.

Don't waste your time unless the book is REQUIRED by your class.

This is a horrible book. It's clear from the onset that it was written with prenursing/premed students in mind, and in my opinion this text is better suited for an AP chem class in a high school than it is for an undergrad or post-bacc setting. It gives you the barest of bare bones explanations of the science going on, with little to no elaboration as to why it is important to know or how any one topic relates to another. This is particularly glaring in the end of chapter questions in which they will ask you the same question two or three times in a row in slightly different ways, as if whoever wrote question 17 didn't know someone else had already written question 16 about the same concept. It's almost as if whoever wrote the questions did so with nothing but this book as a resource, and as a result the bare boned content comes back to haunt anyone using this text, as some of the questions are full of half truths or in a handful of cases, flat out falsehoods.

Saved me hundreds, literally.

If you are lucky enough to have a science department that assigns this book, thank them! This was for mandatory chem course non-majors, and they had us use it for all three classes. HUGE savings for the students, very considerate on the professors' part. The book itself was perfectly fine for my usage, which wasn't super in depth. It is probably not suitable (a high enough level) for any kind of chem major, but for gen eds it's perfect.

Rented Textbook

I rented this textbook and it was in very nice condition. I highly recommend you rent this if you are able to. As for the book itself, it was organized very well and I found it very useful. It's not the most exciting topic in my opinion, but the textbook does a good job of making it slightly less boring.

Very Pleasantly Surprised

I was quite surprised at the amount of well organized information packed into this one, especially for the price. I'm also converting to Lion from Snow Leopard, so some of the Mac information was not new, but the new aspects are well handled. I was having a Time Machine issue, which was very well explained, as were the new features and many things I never really learned about the last operating system.

Of course, on my K3, gray scale screen shots are not what one would hope for, but in the Kindle for PC and Kindle for the Mac apps the book is beautiful. Well laid out and illustrated as well as well thought out. [When I bought this and posted the review, the Kindle for Mac app had not caught up with Lion. The new K for Mac update was posted the same day].

I think the target audience for this will be new and mid range users, not the power user folks, but this is one of the best computer books I've picked up for the intended audience. I was very pleased to see it so soon after Lion came out.

I have been using Snow Leopard and looked forward to the new Lion OS, and figured I would need a book giving me advice and hints about how to use the new OS features...this book is just a print out of the dry, wordy and complex manual that Appke distributes.
No advice, no "hints", scant photos, and a waste of time to go through all the pages.

Difficult-to-find masterpieces from Rachmaninoff the transcriber.

Worth it for the gorgeous Tchaikovsky Romance alone. These transcriptions are some of Rachmaninoff's best piano works. The Tchaikovsky Lullaby is actually a song. In transcribing it, Rachmaninoff does much more than just add the singing line into the composition-- he transposes it into the lush key of C# major, and he brings out the singing tones in a subtle dance between the right and left hand. This piece is a quintessential example of how to get a transcription right!
Included in this volume are major works by Bach, Kreisler, and Rach himself. You also get a CD (more value) to help you discover these complex masterpieces. If you are a pianist and a lover of Russian music, I highly recommend folding the Tchaikovsky transcription into your repertory. The Bach Partita is equally stunning and shows the composer's range of styles.
This music is not easy to find, and the volume handily places some of Rach's best transcriptions in one volume. The editing is superb, with background information, fingering, alternate note configurations, as well as the previously-mentioned cd. Get this volume now. Any of these works would delight and surprise an audience. They deserve a much wider hearing.

I first became acquainted with this text as a student of Dr. Djuric's during the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, the very useful note set was published as a hardcover book. As a meteorologist, I can tell you there are few texts that combine so much practical information along side the science/math to back it up. Unlike other texts which may provide similar information, this is written at a simpler level. Anyone interested in weather forecasting can learn from this book...

For me the strength is a lot of conceptual reflection on how the formulas work, what individual terms mean, and how to apply with useful approximations. I was hoping for more case studies of options prices and looking at how stock and options prices interact in the market. This book really doesn't do that. But if you want a derivation of Black-Scholes and thoughtful discussion of terms and parameters this is excellent.

Quickly builds intuition for financial derivatives

Tremendously valuable book for its selection and excellent treatment of many rarely addressed aspects of financial derivatives and the care with which intuition for these aspects is developed.

Financial mathematics exists at the intersection of many different fields, yielding many possible perspectives from which to teach and learn about this discipline. Many of these perspectives bog down in the rigor of their respective fields. Such approaches render it difficult to absorb and apply core concepts without spending a great deal of time in first learning topics such as advanced probability theory and stochastic calculus.

Dr. Crack's approach seems to be to develop the intuition as a framework for understanding further advanced study, should it be warranted by the reader. At the same time, he includes many aspects of the underlying science to help bridge the gap between the academic world and the world of trading.

For example, his derivation of the solution to the Black-Scholes equation and subsequent analysis of the components of the solution leaves the reader fully prepared to quickly and intelligently grasp the impact of changes in assumptions. This is in contrast to many treatments that seem to stop at the solution, leaving the reader feeling as though the Black-Scholes solution is simply a black-box with no intuitive connection to the real world.

Great Introduction to Option Pricing

This is an excellent introduction to option pricing, with a great deal of both analytical and practical information. While there is a lot of mathematics (obviously), the logical progression of topics and easy to read text make it quite accessible. Intuition and reasoning are used in conjunction with the mathematics to help make somewhat abstract ideas more concrete. Although the focus of the text is on option pricing, several other facets of finance are explored to help illuminate general pricing/investment strategies. This is an easy to follow book with justifications at every step of the way - great for students as well as investors interested in option trading.

I live in the beautiful mountains of Lake County, California. I have always loved hiking, camping, rafting and being outdoors. I’ve also been involved in the martial arts for years—I hold a third degree black belt, instruct in a Korean karate system, and have taught self-defense. WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This "latest" novel from Christine Feehan just arrived. Looking at the copyright dates on this "new" novel, I discovered this is just a re-release of two old stories: "Magic in the Wind" and "Oceans of Fire" both of which are stories in the Drake Sisters series.

I hate it when authors/publishers do this. I feel cheated since I already had the two novels in my library. I probably should have paid closer attention. Since I order so many books I usually keep my eye on the published date. This one claims to be a 2010 release - NOT!!!

This was a pre-ordered item. In the future I'll wait until it's actually released then I can check out more of the information such as the real date of publication.

Too much trouble to return so I'll pass this book on to my daughter.

If publishers keep doing this I will NOT buy books by this author again.

I really hate that expression but the publishers pulled a fast one. I bought this book because I like reading C. Feehan's books. It never occured to me that it was a repeat with the date 2/Nov/2010. They should at least include the opinion writings of the books entailed in Sea Storm. What a waste of money. I will not preorder anything of hers again. From now on reviews comes first.

Left me (even more) depressed

Maybe the positive reviews colored my expectations. (Or maybe it was my own depression) but I expected it to be - well - more funny. Instead it was like reading my best friend's diary. You know...the cute, rich friend. The one who thinks she can relate to you with her body issues (she's skinny with large breasts) and quirky family (2 parent household - both intellectual professionals - you know - perfect). You're working at Taco Bell while she attends Vassar, gets her dream job, marries the love of her life and has a baby.

Spoiler alert - she's dumped by her first boyfriend and experiences...bad feelings. Yup. Sounds about right. Oh, and that time she turned down that job offer from Letterman? Tragic. (But don't worry, she got another one.) More whiny than funny, the book didn't make me laugh, it made me sad. If her life is a mess...Damn! Mine is a total freak show.

Maybe that's the point? Afterall (Klein points out) if Nicole Kidman is miserable and alone after winning an Oscar and Jessi Klein is miserable and alone after shopping at Bergdorf's, wearing Manolos (albeit uncomfortable ones) and winning her Emmy...think about how the rest of us poor shlubs feel. (Maybe I should drown myself in a bathtub now.) The Carrie Bradshaws of the world should like this book. Me? Not so much.

Lots of funny lines in this memoir-- some serious moments

This is a funny book, but that is to be expected from the author, Jessi Klein; she is the head writer for a series on Comedy Central. But really, I laughed out loud on multiple occasions as she reminisced about paying $150.00 for a “thingy” of eye cream, “the circumference of a bottle cap” that left her undereye area worse off. Or when she is talking about how Victoria Secrets sets the standard for what bras and underwear are supposed to look like: The matching set, at a bare minimum, must be “sexy enough for a fifteen-year-old boy to jerk off to.” Her discussion of porn has funny moments: “looking at porn has somehow rewired a primitive, reptilian neural pathway in my brain in such a way that I am now jerking off like a man.” Her discussions about natural childbirth versus the use of an epidural are hilarious: “It's interesting that no one cares very much about the woman doing anything 'naturally' until it involves them being in excruciating pain.” When she was “trying” to get “prego” she was told she didn't have to have sex daily-- she asks her doctor, “But it should be vaginal right?” Lots of funny lines in this memoir-- some serious moments; when she talks about that “sad species of vacation couples go on when it's the last one they'll take together, and sometimes one person knows it, and sometimes both people know it.” I recommend this book.
