He is co-editor in chief of the journal Global Responsibility to Protect.

Useful pulmonary physiology introduction and reference

I used this book for my pulmonary block in medical school. If you like to preview topics before class, this book covers everything that will be discussed. It's also good for clarifying the more difficult concepts from lecture. The book goes into more detail than is strictly required for basic medical pulmonology (e.g. derivations of mathematical representations of concepts), however, the biggest ideas are well-summarized at the end of each chapter in the practice question section. Taking into account the relatively low cost, short length, and usefulness as a reference and practice question bank, I recommend this book for medical school pulmonary coursework.

This book was short and concise. Extra gibberish was omitted - the remnants were a beautiful combination of text and explanations to often confusing topics. This book is perfect for any one studying respiration. This book is intended for med school students, but it is written in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and read it. Reviewing? Cramming? Learning? This book will solve all your problems.

Well worth buying

This is an excellent introduction to respiratory physiology suitable for medical students.
It is concise and good for last-minute revising but written in a style that is very easy on the reader. The organisation of the chapters is perfect.
My only criticism is that the oxygen and CO2 dissociation curves are not very accurately drawn, but the book is otherwise full of useful diagrams.
Well worth adding to your collection.

Amazing, amusing, tragic and poignant all at the same time

As a 13 year old I can remember having to learn about Franz Ferdinand, The Black Hand Gang, allies and enemies, dates and times and other mundane facts that actually didn't mean much to me.

In contrast, this book would enthuse any Year 7 pupil (and in my case 40+) to do a GCSE in History or just be grateful for our freedom and the fact that we can read a book like this!

Unlike others who have tackled this subject recently (e.g., Ricklefs), The End of Innocence is concise (336 p.), focused and what's more surprising for a translated book, beautifully written and organized.

There is a modicum of historical perspective, but the bulk of the material centers around the waning days of the Suharto (New Order) era, and the advent of democracy (Reformasi). Relevant to all the religious challenges facing Indonesia today.

Destiny vs. Choice

This is a good book, and an interesting exploration into all things related to the concepts of destiny, fate, free will and choice, and how these can affect our lives.
The book explores in varying detail: historical ideas and philosophical thinking about fate and free will; evolution; quantum physics; The Law of Attraction; the paranormal; DNA; astrology; and religious ideas about reincarnation.

It will not give you a definitive answer as to whether our lives are predetermined, or if we have a choice over what happens to us, but it introduces and explains many different beliefs, from religious to scientific and everything in between. It also affirms the notion that most people believe in something in between i.e. that both destiny and choice play a part in our lives to a certain degree. I wasn't sure whether all of the information in the book was accurate (for example, the lines shown on the hand when the author was describing palmistry did not correspond with the traditionally accepted palmistry lines), and some of the scientific/quantum physics explanations left me confused. On the whole though, it is a fun and entertaining look at different ideas surrounding whether fate is responsible for what happens in our lives. I also liked reading the true stories at the end of the book about how fate/destiny/free will had played a part in different people's lives.

On the whole, the books seems well researched and contains a great deal of information on the subject that will help to inspire people who would like to look deeper into these concepts.
I like the author's style of writing and her upbeat and humourous narrative helped to keep me interested.
There is definitely a lot of food for thought contained within the pages of this book and I would recommend it to anyone who has ever wondered whether our lives are controlled by a higher power, or whether we can steer our lives in any direction we choose.

Fascinating read!

Marie Jones is a meticulous researcher for all of her subjects, and this book is no exception. Before publishing, she asked for her friends' opinions on Destiny vs. Choice and for personal anecdotes. While I could think of several to send her, it seemed as if I couldn't decide whether my experiences were truly destiny or my own personal choice - maybe a little of both? I didn't submit any experiences to her, but this book is full of arguments for either case, and does not disappoint in logic and reasoning. A fascinating read!

A Spiritual Exploration

Do we have Free Will or are we at the mercy of an unchangeable destiny? Or is there some balance, some combination of both choice and fate that keeps us moving and motivated? Even more profound a question: using what we believe to be free will, do all roads ultimate lead to a pre-determined outcome? These are the questions that inspired me to write my novels and these are the same questions that Jones attempts to answer in this book. Jones takes us on a journey, exploring schools of thought from determinism and predestination, to fatalism, chance, Christianity, eastern traditions, first cause, choice, and chaos. She then tackles that sticky ground between science, religion and reincarnation, finding compelling links based on DNA and the nature/nurture controversy. To add to the mix, she throws in some star gazing, soul contracts, and divination.

This is a highly-researched book, yet is is still very readable. Jones has an accessible writing style, warmed by humor and honesty. I strongly recommend this book. A must-read for people with inquiring minds. While we don't walk away with answers, we do walk away with a deeper understand of the questions and lots of food for thought. -- Patricia Sheehy, Author of Field of Destiny.

About the Author
Wayne W. Dyer is one of the most widely read authors today in the field of self-development. He is the author of many books, including such bestsellers as Your Erroneous Zones, You'll See It When You Believe It, and Real Magic.

Absolutely excellent

I purchased this cassette 2 years ago and am now replacing it; I listen to it A LOT! I find it easy to quote the statements/affirmations in many different situations in life (I have almost memorized them). The tape really does offer words of wisdom. I, unlike another reviewer, like the short statements, as varied as they are, rather than a continuous dialogue. Mr. Dyer states that the tape is designed this way, to pick out one idea at a time. I can listen to it over and over again, and still catch something I missed, or understood differently before. If you want to hear a postive message, if you want to retrain your thinking to a loving/positive mode, I can't say enough good about the message on this tape.

A Single Quote Can Transform Your Life

It seems amazing to think about how words can destroy or enliven our lives. One sentence can inspire a new direction and a phrase can transform your existence. When we are struggling with decisions it is often the wise words of a friend that saves us from making the wrong choice.

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's thoughts have always been an inspiration to me and I see them as meaningful messages for a hurting planet. There is so much pain in life, but there is also the possibility of living in pure joy.

I still love thinking about this quote: "You are not a human being having a spiritual experience. You are a spiritual being having a human experience."

What an empowering thought.

This book is filled with inspiring ideas that refocus your attention on how things actually are instead of how you thought they originally should be. On the surface we may feel that we are drowning in life's challenges, but when you think of yourself as an eternal soul, problems melt away and you view your life from an eternal perspective. This doesn't mean that you don't deal with anguish and sorrow, but you deal with it from a new perspective. Life becomes a blink of the eye in the light of an eternal existence.

I love how Dr. Dyer explains forgiveness as an act of self-love because when you forgive you simply don't have to carry the problem around with you.

Dr. Dyer is really stating what our souls already know to be true. He just says everything so brilliantly. Lately, I've been contemplating his advice about loving those who are difficult to love. I am thinking about his statement about loving and his statement about "the more you give away, the more you get back."

A few of the quotes in this book made me laugh out loud. Dr. Dyer is not always serious and can actually be rather playful in his use of words.

Words can be used as powerful weapons to destroy or they can bring great beauty to our lives. I see beauty in Dr. Wayne Dyer's revelation of inner wisdom. I seem to think about his words at least once a day, especially when I start to think negatively. I am just a soul trying to live in this body that ties me to the earth. One day I won't live here anymore and it is empowering to think of myself as an eternal being temporarily in this school of life.

I'm working on this one! However lately I've noticed that my "invisible and silent" thoughts are being heard loud and clear. Although I still think our lives benefit from the power of the positive choice. Some thoughts magically transform your life without the addition of action, and some thoughts grow inside you and propel you forward into action.

If you think about it, spiritual teachers have been giving us the secret keys to inner wisdom throughout time. I think of quotes as keys. I can use them to open up new and unexplored territory in the areas of thought and spirituality.

Dr. Dyer has a lot of keys to free you from the prison of negativity.

Incredible!

This is a fantastic calendar. It is not year specific. You flip a page each day. Some days are good, and others are excellent. Some can change your whole attitude when life seems to be going the wrong way. One friend keeps wondering how the thoughts keep matching what she needs to hear at that time.
There is definately energy in this calendar that goes beyond the paper it is printed on.
I don't really care for daily calendars, and I have been using this one every day for at least 4 years now. Get it!
