Warm Bodies and The New Hunger: A Special 5th Anniversary Edition, by Isaac Marion

Warm Bodies, Isaac Marion’s bestselling tale of a zombie’s return to humanity through an unlikely encounter with love, has captured hearts worldwide, appearing in twenty-seven languages and inspiring a major film along with a passionate fandom. This special five-year anniversary edition includes the powerful prequel novella, The New Hunger, which sheds light on the saga’s past while setting the stage for its epic conclusion.

In the “highly original” (Seattle Times) Warm Bodies, “R” is a man with an existential crisis: he is dead. He shuffles through an America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his fellow zombies, but he craves something more than brains and the memories he gains when he eats them. He wants a life of his own.

After absorbing the poignant life of a troubled young man, R makes a choice that begins the unlikeliest of relationships—with his victim’s ex-girlfriend. Julie is angry and scared but fiercely alive, a blast of color in R’s grey existence, and as they struggle to protect each other from the grim society around them, they begin to set off dangerous sparks—the kind that could revive their lifeless world, or start a war that destroys it.

But their story doesn’t end—or begin—there. The New Hunger takes us back seven years to a crucial crossroads in three young lives. Julie and her parents drive across the wastelands of America in search of a new home. Her future friend Nora struggles to protect her brother, a boy with a secret that might one day change the world. And in the darkness of a forest, a dead man opens his eyes. Who is he? What is he? As R unravels these grim mysteries and Julie and Nora scour the world for hope, each step brings them closer to an encounter of beauty and tragedy that will change the course of their lives.

Together, Warm Bodies and The New Hunger form a richly layered tale of love and hope in the darkest of times, while also opening the doors to an epic saga that continues with The Burning World, an excerpt of which is included in this edition for current fans and newcomers alike.

Amazing prequel novella to Warm Bodies
By titania86
The New Hunger is a prequel to the novel Warm Bodies. It examines the origins of characters R, Julie, and Nora eight years before they cross paths in Warm Bodies. The three narratives are told in alternating chapters and all are amazing. The world they live in is falling apart. Civilization is hanging by a thread. Cities that were deemed save not long ago are discovered to be overrun. The weather is becoming more and more extreme in addition to the zombie problem. No place is safe.

R has just wakened to his unlife as a zombie. He's fairly confused and can remember snatches of his old life, but it's fleeting. There's a monster in the back of his mind who mocks him and won't tell him what will sate this horrible, insatiable hunger inside of him. His story shows that he was never a normal zombie. Even when the inner monster was screaming at him, he would sometimes save whatever human victim was in front of him. He also meets M, sees the Boneys' creation, and has small but meaningful encounters with Julie.

Julie is 12 years old, but she's adept in combat training and weapons as is necessary to live in this post-apocalyptic world. Although young, she already has a jaded, adult air about her. She's never experienced anything that a normal teen should: first kiss, awkward dates, school, and no real worries. She has starved for days, killed people in defense, killed zombies, set piles of bodies a fire, and tries to take care of her family however she can while they look for a permanent home. Her parents try to shield her as much as they can, but she can't be protected from a shattered world where most are dead and they can't find a safe haven.

Nora is 16 years old and the guardian of her 7 year old brother Addis. She can't succumb to her own sadness or hopelessness because she would take her brother with her. She keeps strong and pushes forward to find food and shelter each night. I found her story the most compelling because she was presented with the hardest choices. Should she help a random stranger or leave them to die for the safety of herself and her brother? So many of us would say it's an easy choice. However the crux of the novel is that without humanity, it isn't really living. You wouldn't really be any different than the zombies. Her story was also the most emotional for me.

The New Hunger had one small flaw. Marion describes R and M very similarly and it wasn't clear at times who it was. The novella is also so short. It makes me want to read Warm Bodies again to have a different view of R, Julie, and Nora. Other than that, I absolutely loved The New Hunger. It has gotten me more eager for the sequel to Warm Bodies called The Burning World.

Loved it!

Prequel to Warm Bodies.

In this prequel we learn more about the main characters. Julie is a 12-year-old girl taking a trip with her parents. The world has changed and she has seen her nightmares come alive. Her parents are trying to find a safe place for them to settle.

Nora is only sixteen. She and her brother Addis have one purpose in life: to stay alive. Finding food and refuge is a priority. Nothing else matters.

And of course we get some R. He has just become one of them. He's trying to understand this new world he has woken up to. He knows he's different. He can feel it but he can also feel the hunger calling.

Great way to introduce these characters. I liked how their lives intertwined years before.
The horror of the new world is there but also the hope. Hope like a lingering spark...

If I had to pick a favorite character in this novella it has to be Nora. She was a survivor but she was just a teen, doing the best she could to keep the only family she has alive. Her love for her brother was deep. She would do anything for him. She also recognized that not all zombies were the same and just maybe not everything was lost. Did she make a mistake?

As a side note, I'm super excited for the sequel!

The Testing, by Joelle Charbonneau

It’s graduation day for sixteen-year-old Malencia Vale, and the entire Five Lakes Colony (the former Great Lakes) is celebrating. All Cia can think about—hope for—is whether she’ll be chosen for The Testing, a United Commonwealth program that selects the best and brightest new graduates to become possible leaders of the slowly revitalizing post-war civilization. When Cia is chosen, her father finally tells her about his own nightmarish half-memories of The Testing. Armed with his dire warnings (”Cia, trust no one”), she bravely heads off to Tosu City, far away from friends and family, perhaps forever. Danger, romance—and sheer terror—await.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Like almost every 16-year-old in the United Commonwealth, Cia Vale hopes to be called for the Testing, her ticket out of rural Five Lakes Colony and into the University in Tosu City. Cia's father was selected, but only vaguely remembers the experience in nightmares. Her four older brothers were passed over. Just when she has resigned herself to life as a mechanic or farmer, she gets word that she is one of four students selected from Five Lakes and is expected to board the skimmer to Tosu City the next day, most likely never to return. The bulk of the book is taken up with the Testing-devious exercises to identify those with superior leadership skills as society has suffered through Seven Stages of War and desperately needs to repair the damage to living creatures and the environment. The mental and physical trials will weed out 80 percent of the candidates, leaving several maimed or dead. Cia teams up with Tomas for both practical and romantic reasons. She is independent and smart for the most part, and Tomas seems almost too good to be true. There are double-crosses, mutant life-forms, and booby traps to navigate before 20 hearty souls receive word that they have passed. Cia's story is expected to span a trilogy. The influence of The Hunger Games is obvious, and The Testing will satisfy readers who want similar dystopian adventures.-Maggie Knapp, Trinity Valley School, Fort Worth, TXα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Mystery writer Charbonneau throws her hat into the YA dystopian ring with this series opener that bears more than a slight resemblance to The Hunger Games. Sixteen-year-old newly graduated Cia Vale is selected to take part in The Testing, a process that offers the only chance at a college education and training to become part of the next generation of leaders. Cia has spent years preparing for this—it’s her chance to help the United Commonwealth recover from the devastating Seven Stages War. Cia’s father, who took part in The Testing himself, warns her to trust no one. Charbonneau is treading familiar ground as she sets her young heroine against a government machine that is focused, brutal, and duplicitous. Though the story moves quickly, readers might be confused as to the reasons behind the government’s methods. Why the brutality against students? There is no indication that the citizens are oppressed, and they’re unaware of how gruesome The Testing is. The ending will ensure interest in the next installment, but hopefully book two will deliver some answers. Grades 7-12. --Kara Dean

Test your patience.
By Nicky's Mom MD
I didn't even think about "Hunger Games" when I began reading this book. Within the first hundred pages I realized that it was a clone of that type of story. I decided I had invested too much time to quit reading, so I read on. This is NO clone. I t is unfortunate that this book came out after "Hunger Games," because it shares a lot of story points. The heroine is a teen who is forced to face a life threatening challenge because of a murderous government. That is where the similarities end, however.
This is a much richer and more complex story. At the end of book one, the trials of Cia and her friends are just beginning. Possibilities are still nearly endless at this point. I won't tell you any more because this is cutting into my reading time and book two awaits.
Read this!

An adventure that is NOT to be missed!!
By Alicia
I've had my eye on THE TESTING long before it was released. I even received an eARC from the publisher for review. I was just sooo excited to read this, but for some crazy reason, I didn't. I kept thinking how awesome this series sounds, and how much I love dystopians, but I kept putting it off. So finally, when I received my credits from audible audio, I said what the hell, it's finally time to give THE TESTING it's fair shot. And OMG, I found myself instantly drawn into this story. The narrator was amazing, and the mystery was alluring, and I was easily able to get into the vibes. I couldn't help but to pick this audiobook up every free chance I got.

THE PLOT...

Cia has always lived a fairly good life, better then most anyway. With a big family, all brothers, and two loving successful parents that any child would appreciate. She's been preparing for the opportunity to be chosen for The Testing. But when the time comes to graduate and become an official adult, Cia's world becomes a living nightmare.

Cia's dreams have finally come true, she's officially been chosen for The Testing!! And she can't be more thrilled. She's always hoped for the opportunity to show her government just how much she can contribute in making the Commonwealth a better place for their future. And now after all her hard work, it's finally paid off. Until The Testing actually starts and Cia finally sees The Testing for what it really is, a death trap in waiting!

Cia has no choice but to go through with The Testing, or risk treason against the United Commonwealth. And that right there could mean a death sentence in itself. But Cia's not giving up, she's smart, determined, and not easily manipulated. And besides, Cia has one thing that gives her an advantage, and just might keep her alive long enough to get through The Testing. She has her fathers words, his warnings, his own experiences through The Testing. But as The Testing gets deeper, and Cia finds herself getting closer to the finish line, her fathers words ring in her ears "Trust no one." But Cia finds herself drawn to her childhood friend Tomas, and feels for some reason, he can be trusted. But what about the other Testing Candidates? Can they be trusted? Who's real, and who isn't? Who is befriending her to betray her? And who is befriending her to ally with her?

As the plot thickens, and The Testing Candidates get further into The Testing, they will have to determine who is deadly, and who is just trying survive. Because before all is said and done, they will come face to face with death, but whether or not they survive is up to them. But Cia may find that there is more cutthroats then not, and if she has any chance of surviving, she will have to do as her father said "Trust no one!" But surly, she can trust Tomas, can't she?

THE TESTING was a great addition to the Dystopian genre, that is sure to please many readers. I'm looking forward to finishing this series and seeing what happens next in Cia and Tomas's adventure!

Overall, THE TESTING was a fast-paced, action-packed, thrill-ride, that is not to be missed! If you love action, adventure, corrupt governments, rebellions, and overall, a great dystopian novel, then THE TESTING is sure to please!!!

NOTE: I received an eARC from Houghton Mifflin Books for reviewing purposes. All opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in any way!

First Book Good, The Other Two Lacking!
By Sany123
Although I am WELL ABOVE, VERY VERY WELL ABOVE the age of Young Adult readers, I still enjoy reading YA Dystopian novels. This first book was very good. it kept my interest so well, I read it in 2 days, even though I had ALOT of other things to fit into those two days. Without giving any spoilers away, this series of 3 books starts over a hundred years after catastrophic wars and environmental disasters occur, as well they might the way things are going now! So the brightest young people of each graduating class in the colonies (who are "reclaiming and rebuilding" the earth) are sent to the only major city left to go through Testing. Testing DOES include written exams, but it also includes "life or death" situations to weed out those who aren't strong enough to be leaders of the next generation. I bought all the novels of the series at the same time, so I didn't have to wait until I ordered and received the other two. I may as well say here what I thought about the next (and last) two. This series has been compared by many, many reviewers and critics as being too much like "The Hunger Games". I've never read those books nor watched the movies, so I can't judge if that's true. However, I DID read the Divergent series, and like that series, the next two books pretty much follow into the same category-where a group of teenagers are accepted by the highest leaders of the land, work within their midst, having discovered some time back that these teens did not accept the laws of the land and rebelled against these laws. In all the dystopian Young Adult series I've read, it's the same thing. The first of the series is good and draws the reader in, but the next two books get more and more unrealistic and become somewhat stupid and boring. It was the same here. At least in this series the Protagonist didn't sacrifice her life for some unknown reason, but the ending was still disappointing-although nowhere near that other series (Divergent). However, as I already mentioned at the beginning, I'm not a Young Adult, and I haven't been for a LONG, LONG time. So it might be me and not the young people in the book or the author.

Amazing Series!!!
By Carol
RATING 4.5 STARS

Liberation is book three in the Alien Attachments series by Sabine Priestley. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author.

This book centers on Balastar Alder and Kit Athorika. I am so happy Balastar got his own story. I felt so bad for him when things didn’t work out for him in the earlier book. And boy oh boy will you see another side to the proper gentleman you got to know when you first met him.

Balastar is in search of more of the black devices that can create portals called spatial distorters. This is how he first met Kit. They were both after the distorters when Torogs came after them. Kit’s first impression of Balastar was pure hotness in his pirate type clothing, and Balastar thought Kit was a dark haired beauty with her colored stripe down one side of her hair that constantly changes colors with her mood. The two of them are forced to lay low for awhile on Balastar’s ship. Hmmm, I wonder what they will do to pass the time. Balastar convinced Kit to come back to Earth with him to talk to the Cavacents about what has been going on with her home planet.

The connection is strong with Balastar and Kit but they are both convinced that it is nothing but chemistry. That they can both go their own way when it’s time and say good-bye. That’s what they thought anyway. But the psi-bond has begun, and when it is time to say good-bye, being away from each other does not work out…at all.

Things on the planet Sandaria are rapidly falling apart. The leader of the portal masters is gaining an appetite for power and hatches a crazy plan to take all the power for himself. He is kidnapping the Vertans from their own planet to create and maintain the portals. Balastar, Kit, the Cavacents, and the other earth protectors have to find a way to stop the madness, free the Vertans, stop the power hungry portal masters and restore leadership on Sandaria. During all of this, Kit and Balastar are exploring their new bond and let me tell you, these two are hot!

Kit and Balastar’s travels take them all over the place in the galaxy in their fight to free the Vertans and to save Sandaria and the portals. When Balastar took Kit to Earth and she met Ria and Dani, she found something she had been missing for a long time, friendship. It’s something she hasn’t been able to experience for so long with her own planet being in such turmoil. I really enjoyed getting to see more of all my favorite characters from the previous two books.

This book is a crazy, sexy, nonstop ride from the beginning to the end as this group once again puts themselves in danger to do the right thing, to free the Vertans and restore order on Sandaria. There are no slow spots in this book, it kept me turning the pages all the way through. I have really enjoyed getting to know all the characters I have met throughout these books but I think Balastar and Kit might be my favorite. I have loved this series from the start and highly recommend it.

“My Lady, My love, My life.”

Great addition to the Alien Attachments series!
By Diane
Review copy provided via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.

Balastar Alder after the fall of the empire throws his hat in with the Cavacent clan when they travel to Earth. Balastar becomes a captain of his own ship trying to locate portals that work on a different type psi. He runs in to Kit Athorika from Vertan that can work the different portals while she is being chased by the Torogs for being a thorn in their sides. The Torogs have blockaded Vertan for many years for the leadership of the Portal Masters so they can control the portals and the power that goes with it. Balastar and Kit have an immediate attraction for each other and slowly realize they are psi-mates. They feel their way into a relationship while they bring down the bad guys and return freedom to the Vertans.

Any sci-fi romance reader will like Liberation because Balastar meets his match and Kit is definitely his match in all things.

Another great installment in the Alien Attachments series.
By Heidi Senesac
I tumbled headlong back into the world of Alien Attachments with this new book in the series. This story pits Kit Durnar with Baluster Alder and sends them on a quest to free her people, the Vertans, from the quarantine placed on the planet by the Portal Masters, and enforced by the Totogs. That they find love along the way is icing on top of a very adventurous cake.
The descriptions of the world, the action sequences and the love scenes are all done with remarkable attention to detail. The opening will grip you and hold you through the entire book.
This is the third book in the series, and can be read as a standalone. But you will most definitely want to read the earlier books.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up–This fast-paced, captivating sequel to Romeo and Juliet is a fascinating homage to one of the Bard's best-loved plays. Mercutio, Tybalt, Paris, Romeo, and Juliet have all perished by the sword or by poison, and yet the houses of Capulet and Montague still rage against each other. Prince Escalus, desperate for peace in his city, determines that the only way to end the bloodshed is for a marriage to take place between the households. Rosaline, niece to Capulet, who once rejected her erstwhile suitor, Romeo, and Benvolio, nephew to Lord Montague, are the chosen, but they have no interested in marrying each other and resolve to end the violence without approaching the altar. Meanwhile, Rosaline's sister Livia discovers that Paris is still alive and falls in love with him while secretly nursing him back to health. However, Paris, guided by the treachery of Lady Capulet, decides to amass an army to dethrone the prince. Full of secrets, duels, and duplicity, this novel brings a joyous ending to a once-tragic tale. Although Paris and Lady Capulet are evil personified, Rosaline, Benvolio, and Livia are well-developed characters, and Escalus and Friar Lawrence, though less important, are believably complex. The period details of costume and custom greatly enhance the story's realism, and the quick-moving action will keep readers both alert and entranced. This well-written novel, whether standing alone or serving as a back-door introduction to the original, should be a first purchase for school and public libraries.–Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, formerly at LaSalle Academy, Providence, RIα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
When Verona’s violence can’t be quelled, Prince Escalus orders the “dark, devilish” Montague Benvolio to wed Rosaline, of the Capulets. Benvolio sees Rosaline as the cause of the strife that ensues, while Rosaline struggles to reconcile childhood feelings toward Escalus. Together, Benvolio and Rosaline banter their way to a compromise, unmask the mystery person who is on the blood feud, reunite the families, and avoid their undesirable trip to the priest! This dark drama, set in the world of Romeo and Juliet, is tempered with wit and humor as Taub blends Shakespearean-style dialogue with a less opulent prose narrative that artfully decodes the vocabulary for readers new to the Bard. Readers will enjoy following the heroes as they encounter romance, intrigue, and characters reminiscent of Hamlet and the cast of Much Ado about Nothing, among others. Pair this highly enjoyable story with Sharon Draper’s Romiette and Julio (1999) or Suzanne Selfor’s Saving Juliet (2008). Grades 9-12. --Erin Downey Howerton

Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, May 15, 2013:"A perfect blend of the intimate and the epic, the story both honors its origin and works in its own right."

3.5 Stars
By Shanna
I feel a bit like a jerk for giving this book 3.5 stars. I really wanted to enjoy it more, but I found myself struggling a bit to finish it.

At first, the style of the dialogue--somewhat Shakespearean in nature-- was very offputting to me. I struggled to get through it simply because it seemed to be over the top. However, as I continued to read, it started to click by about page 30. I'm not sure if the style gradually tamed itself a bit, or if I became used to it, but at that point I accepted it and even began to enjoy it.

Another thing that lowered my review was the poor romance. For a book based off of a legendary, ill-fated romance of sorts (arguably just infatuation) the romance in this book was frustratingly slow and then all of a sudden far too fast in terms of build-up. It just wasn't written in quite the right way for me as a reader of YA romance/fiction books. Rosaline was likable enough and so was Benvolio, but they didn't mesh well at all. Benvolio wasn't as rounded as a character as Rosaline was and for the most part, all of the other characters seemed very flat and rote.

The book moved at a sluggish pace for the first two thirds, peppered with the occasionally boring death before it started to pick up. I found my attention waning, struggling to find interest to finish the book.

However, despite all those critiques, I really liked the idea behind the book. The author was talented at weaving in many characters from the original play and explaining their actions and their reactions to the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. I enjoyed seeing what happened in Verona afterwards and I liked the author's creativity in that regard.

Can we get a sequel to this sequel to Romeo and Juliet?
By L. Rawles
Full disclosure: I knew Melinda when I was about 17 and she was about 13. She was a pretty cool 13-year-old, but since it's been a decade and a half since I last saw her, I feel like I can be impartial about this book.

And my impartial opinion is: I love this book. Love it to pieces. 4.75 stars, for me.

Still Star-Crossed is the sequel to Romeo and Juliet, and tells what happened after the Capulets and the Montagues swore to the Prince that their deadly feud died with their children. Slight spoiler alert: It didn't go great. "If generations could not cure their ire, will a summer of murder really do so?" asks the Prince.

The heroine of Still Star-Crossed is Rosaline, the girl Romeo first lost his heart to, the girl who turned him down. The girl now wracked with guilt that had she accepted him, both he and her cousin Juliet might still be alive. Not to worry, though; she does not spend her time languishing. Because there is plenty that she is called on to do to save Verona from further bloodshed.

Including marrying Benvolio Montague, Romeo's dear friend, at the order of her beloved prince, Escalus. Marry the man who holds her to blame for the death of his friends, a Montague brought up to hate her as a Capulet descendant? Not terribly appealing. But don't worry; she has a plan....

I don't claim to be a Shakespearean scholar, but I've read quite a few of his plays and enjoy them very much. Melinda made the choice to keep the dialogue true to the way his characters spoke in his plays, using "thee" and "thou." I had no trouble with this, and I think that if you give yourself a chapter or two, you won't have a problem either. I loved the evocative language, and I think it keeps you in the right headspace.

Melinda weaves in characters and references from other Shakespeare plays, but never overdoes it. Instead, they are like delightful Easter eggs, visible only if you're looking for them. She takes CERTAIN LIBERTIES with the characters you may be familiar with from your freshman English class, but it's all to the good.

Rosaline, her sister Livia, Benvolio and Prince Escalus are wonderful characters, and I was happy to see the old crew as well. Friar Laurence! Dear, sweet, stupid Nurse! It's been so long. And the scene with a gravedigger made me chortle with glee.

Still not sold on Still Star-Crossed? Let's ask the grandfather from The Princess Bride. What can we expect from this book, Grandpa? Has it got any sports in it?

"Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, [no] giants, [no] monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..." All this and more.

SATISFYING!
By Kristel V.
A beautiful and engaging read. I loved how the author explored Verona on the aftermath of Romeo and Juliet's deaths. In the middle of trying to end the animosity between the Montagues and the Capulets, the streets of Verona are shaken with deaths from the two Houses in the hands of a mysterious masked man. We see here Rosaline of House Capulet and her sister Livia, Benvolio of House Montague, and Prince Escalus of Verona as key players in the story. I also loved the Shakespearean language used by the author, which is unpretentious and not overbearing. While I wasn't swooned by most of the romance parts (why are people so gullible in Verona?), I loved how the action scenes slowly built up until the climax. The ending is also satisfying.

Our goal for the 4th edition Apparel Manufacturing: Sewn Product Analysis remains the same as it was for the first edition: to provide a broad conceptual and somewhat theoretical perspective of apparel manufacturing that will serve as a foundation for future apparel professionals. We have consulted professionals, industry trade associations, visited factories in national and international locations, and participated in numerous apparel related conferences and workshops to supplement academic research and personal observations.

Although our textbook is widely used by professionals in all segments of the industry it is our goal to assist textile and apparel students to better understand garment manufacturing and the complex decision making involved in producing apparel to meet the needs of the target customer. Our intent is to provide a global and integrated perspective that will enable students to have a comprehensive understanding of the industry and to be well prepared apparel professionals.

The textbook incorporates a professional approach, industry language with an academic orientation, and an improved conceptual framework reflective of changes in the global industry. The content is still divided into five parts that focus on the factors that determine the cost, price, quality, performance, and value of garments.

Part I, "Introduction to Apparel Manufacturing," deals with issues associated with the concepts of product performance and quality, the functional organization of apparel manufacturing firms, and the complexities of operating in a world market. There is increased emphasis on global and retail markets. The first chapter is "Organization of the Apparel Business." The new revision contains descriptions of the different types of retailers and trade associations. Part I also includes updated versions of the chapters "Marketing Strategies" and "Merchandising Processes." This includes a market analysis of U.S. jeans wear and positioning strategies for men's dress shirts.

Part II is titled "Product Development." It includes three chapters that deal with factors relating to product analysis, specification development, and the specific roles of design and technical design in the apparel development processes. Chapters 4 and 5 have been reversed from the 3rd edition. New career opportunities in the industry are still in Chapter 4. The Garment Analysis Guide is enhanced to cover garment analysis as well as specification development. There are new sections on establishing garment fit and finishing.

Part III, "Dimensions of Apparel Management" includes four chapters that deal with apparel management in a global environment. The sequence of chapters has been changed to move "Costs, Costing, Pricing, and Profit," ahead of the chapters on sourcing. This will enable students to relate costing concepts to sourcing issues. . "Materials sourcing and Selection" begins with the discussion of the Global Textile Complex. "Product Development and Production Sourcing" now includes an expanded discussion of import costs.

Part IV, "Focus on Production," consists of five chapters related to the production processes. Content from "Apparel Engineering" and "Preproduction Operations although not significantly changed, has been reordered to reduce duplication and to enhance the flow of information.

Part V, "Findings Management," includes three chapters focusing on issues related to support materials, closures, and trims. The content has been updated to reflect new materials and applications that are viable options in developing products for today's specialized markets.

As with previous editions there are three appendices that discuss applications of the garment analysis system. Styling, materials selection, and assembly methods for three basic products are analyzed relative to target markets, price range, and consumer expectations.

Ultra Informative
By Jessica
This was the required textbook for my Apparel Manufacturing class. My teacher ran her own manufacturing company several years ago and told our class that no book she has read even came close to providing the wealth of knowledge available in this book. Seam finishes are explained in terms necessary to complete spec packs, including seam diagrams and stitch numbers used as standards in the industry world-wide. If you plan on putting a technical section in your portfolio or plan to work in the manufacturing side of the industry or plan on being a pattern maker, I recommend this book more than any other. It is rare that I enjoy a textbook so much, but I have read it through and referenced it constantly since the class. Worth every penny.

A Universe of Knowledge and Best Practice
By Andrew Schonbek
This is what all text books should be like.

I'm presently tasked with overseeing the start up of a garment factory in another country.

I've got plenty of manufacturing experience, but none of it is in apparel. I needed to learn about making clothes - fast.

So I got this book.

Yeah it's expensive, but not when you consider the wealth of practical information packed between its covers.

The authors methodically tackle all aspects of the industry, from the macro to the micro view. At every level there are useful examples, diagrams, charts, and other aids.

Just a few of the topics dealt with in this excellent book include the following:

- Industry organization and globalization;

- Product development processes;

- Managing quality, cost and sourcing functions;

- Detailed focus on all aspects of the production process;

- Garment analysis.

There's over 600 pages of this, but it never gets boring.

All textbooks should be like this.

What does it take to rise from life’s depths, swim against the current, and breathe?

Weighted down by the loss of her parents, Blythe McGuire struggles to keep her head above water as she trudges through her last year at Matthews College. Then a chance meeting sends Blythe crashing into something she doesn’t expect—an undeniable attraction to a dark-haired senior named Chris Shepherd, whose past may be even more complicated than her own. As their relationship deepens, Chris pulls Blythe out of the stupor she’s been in since the night a fire took half her family. She begins to heal, and even, haltingly, to love this guy who helps her find new paths to pleasure and self-discovery. But as Blythe moves into calmer waters, she realizes Chris is the one still strangled by his family’s traumatic history. As dark currents threaten to pull him under, Blythe may be the only person who can keep him from drowning.

This book is intended for mature audiences due to strong language and sexual content.

Left Mesmerized
By Sarai Larivee
There is one thing that I will give Jessica Park credit for in addition to her impeccable writing, and that is contributing to my reader's anxiety. I, myself, am a writer. I'm not much a reader. It takes a lot for me to get sucked into a story long enough to actually enjoy a book or to connect with the characters, so when I do, and the book ends, I mourn slightly. I feel sad, and would like to know what has happened since then. (They ARE real people, damn it!) I think other hardcore bookies will understand that - either that, or I'm crazy. Regardless, after discovering Jessica Park earlier this year, I am hooked. Her writing style is fresh, fearless, pushes boundaries, and utilizes the eloquence of our language while beautifully flowing from scene to scene, infusing modern-day, young vernacular with hints of sarcasm and freely dropping an F-bomb wherever she deems fit. (That's my kinda writing!)

Left Drowning was no exception to any of this. I will admit, I'm not typically a fan of any sort of erotica, but the "adult content" fit so well with the storyline and made the bond between the characters that much stronger. It was beautifully written, with that hint of "naughty" that 99% of people pretend to be offended by but are secretly wishing their significant others would say to them in the middle of a midnight romp. (Don't lie, you know it's true. You're mad because you got caught. It's okay.)

The love story is believable. Whether or not you agree with me completely depends on how you feel about God, or Fate, or whatever entity (or lack thereof) that you may or may not hold dear to you. I have read a few reviews from readers who "didn't get" Chris and Blythe's immediate connection or thought it was weird, and I'm honestly sorry for you. For me, it was actually a relief to read something so beautiful and unforced. I have lived through something very similar, and I married my "Chris", so this book really hit close to home with me (as do all of her other books, in their own special way). He came home from work after I finished reading this last night and I looked at him and couldn't help but cry happy tears. This book helped me reconnect with my own fate for a moment, and that's extraordinary.

I laughed. A lot. I fell in love with Sabin and Blythe's friendship, as I'm sure most other people did. I also cried. The pain is real and emanates right off the page. When Blythe says she can't breathe, you can't breathe. When she talks about the electricity between herself and Chris, your chest is on fire and aches for that.

I honestly can't recommend this book enough.

Thanks again, Jessica. I will be forwarding my therapy bill to you.

From the maker of "Flat-out Love" comes *Creepy-twisty Love*
By Chibi Sparkle
[[This review contains HUGE HUGE SPOILERS!]]

I wanted to like this book. I really did. Flat-Out Love was charming. And, although the book has some of the interesting character dialog as that in Flat-Out Love, I just couldn't bring myself to accept this book.

Maybe I am too much of a feminist to enjoy it? Maybe I just want my heroine to have self respect? I have no idea, but it achieved the opposite effect within me. What I was reading felt like a horribly toxic relationship that made me want to take a mental shower.

....
Super Spoilers
....

First, the characters. The main character, Blythe, showed promise. She had issues, which suggested some sort of growth potential. I liked that she had an obstacle to overcome, and I would have loved, just loved, if the novel addressed more of self-forgiveness, growth, and realization of self worth. Or maybe her renewed interest in faith or maybe something else that gave her comfort? I don't know. But, within the story, it is like Blythe is measured and measures herself based on her relationship with the other characters. As such, Blythe's personality falters. Once she is defined by her relationship with the other characters, her personality becomes secondary, and we readers are left to assume Blythe is just stellar and fabulous only because others find her so.

Christopher, the main love interest...where do I start... It seems that the book goes to great length to describe just how he looks, how hot he is, etc. But, his supposed wonderful personality is just not present or just wanes as the story goes along. The actions of Chris, however, speak loud and clear. Of course he is protective, he is damaged, he is hot, but why exactly am I supposed to root for him? To be honest, I couldn't stand him after reading the novel. (See below)

The Story:
The biggest issues that I have with the story deal with the narrative of how their relationship is played out...it is just. so. toxic. There are two hugely troubling points:
A) Our heroine has little to no self respect, and I really, really wish she did; and
B) It is almost delusional to think that endings usually work out like this.

*Super Spoiler Heavy*
A):
- Chris tells Blythe, straight up, that he doesn't want a relationship with anyone, and Blythe seemingly processes this yet somehow feels that, one day, Chris will see the light and be with her. [um, no dear..]
- Blythe takes control of her destiny and tries to pursue Chris by being more forward. (as is her right to take control of her own destiny) Chris, in turn, accepts this unwillingly and then later willingly, but then turns around to promptly ignore her for proportional lengths of time. It seems somewhat clear that Blythe is giving some kind of incentive so that Chris will like her and be with her, as she wants, but Chris feels no incentive to stay. [Blythe never asks herself the fundamental question of "why would I want to be with this guy anyway?"--we as the readers do not know, until the book reminds us that it is because of, oh yeah, their fate/destiny/magical pheromones]
- Blythe states to Chris that she doesn't want a boyfriend because she is too messed up, but yet contradicts this with her actions and internal dialog.
- Blythe sleeps with Chris (her first time, of course) because he is just so so beautiful and because of their *connection*. Blythe says that this was the moment that she fell in love. (Sending the supposed message that sex=love for women? I wish that sex=sex for Blythe, but no)
- Once Chris gets said sex, he promptly cuts and runs, ignoring her some more. [Wasn't their a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode about this? At least Chris didn't turn into a demon, though]
- Surprise surprise, Chris is involved with someone new...and even gets engaged! Our heroine Blythe gets angry about this and ignores Chris, feels depressed, etc. Why be shocked? He told Blythe that he was unavailable from the beginning. [But, I have to give her a slow clap, as Blythe did appear to walk away....until....]
- She professes that she loves him and that they belong together. Of course, Chris says indirectly he just feels toooo much with her and that's why he must marry someone else. [Excuse me? Run, Blythe. Do not walk. Run away from this sociopath]
- A year passes, but Blythe swears that can be no other except Chris. Chris, meanwhile, is still engaged and getting married. Blythe appears to interpret, through suggestion, that it would be a great idea to crash the wedding. [...I have no words]

But, here is where it gets into fantasy B)
- After crashing the wedding, Blythe comes to find that Chris is not, I repeat, not getting married! That is because the wedding is called off! Why is the wedding not called off? Because Chris saw the light and stopped it?? Nope, he just waited until his fiance stopped it, because at least *she* was smart enough to recognize that Chris was (a sociopath) not in love with her.
- Blythe basically forgives him (or at least enables him) within minutes! After all, no more wedding!
- Added bonus, Chris tells Blythe that, even though he was engaged for more than a year, he did NOT sleep with his fiance! So Chris is joyously unsullied by the new woman and may now resume his relationship with Blythe! (AGAIN with this theme of sex=love?)
-(Emotional unavailability by Chris, rinse and repeat, etc. etc. until....)
- The end! Where Chris FINALLY SEES the light, and he is changed! Blythe changed Chris! He stays with Blythe because he realizes there can be no other.

At the end, I just felt gross...like Chris was this hard-won prize to Blythe, but he was just so awful and manipulative. Was he to be women's ideal?!

The aforementioned sequence of events seems like some sort of perverse wish fulfillment.

People, for the most part, do not change like this. Yet, stories are made that try to convince us that people can, in fact, change like this. All that women have to do is keep pushing and sacrificing themselves, and eventually the men will change. This message is just really wrong.

I'd much rather go back to Flat-out Love, thank you.

One of the best books of 2013!!!!!
By Jen Literary Gossip
I have been racking my brain for the right words to clearly describe my love for this gut-wrenching, amazing, brilliant novel. I've looked up words in the Thesaurus and still, nothing can quite fit the bill. I can only compare it to the feelings I had when I read Hopeless by Colleen Hoover. I was left feeling overwhelmed by the tragedy these characters faced. My chest ached (I caught myself rubbing my chest to try to alleviate the discomfort quite a few times), my heart hurt and my brain was buzzing with all kinds of emotions. I had this crazy urge to flag people down on the street and tell them to mark their calendars for July 16, 2013 so they can buy this book, because it's going to rock their world. Left Drowning is the perfect combination of angst and sex with a storyline that is gripping, thought-provoking, tortured and dark.
Blythe McGuire breaks my heart. To say she is an emotional wreck is an understatement. Her life was changed forever when a fire took half of her family. I can't even imagine how one would live with a tragedy like that. She drinks to numb herself from the emotional pain she carries around. She's haunted by a brother, who she was once extremely close to, and now isn't. You can feel her desperation in wanting to be forgiven for her actions the night of the fire. Blythe is closed off, shut down and barely functioning when she meets Chris Shepherd. Almost instantly, Blythe feels a connection to Chris that leaves her reeling, wanting more, and suddenly... hopeful. Hopeful that she can pull out of her despair and be normal again. Hopeful that she and Chris can become something more.
Blythe becomes close to Chris and his siblings, since they all attend the same college together. As they become their own little family, Blythe finds herself coming to terms with her past and finally allows herself to begin the grieving process and heal. Chris is instrumental with the healing. He knows just the things to say to allow her to cope and keep moving -
"Blythe." Chris looks around the room as if trying to find a way to convince me. He thinks for a minute. "Your parents died. Your world fell apart."
I nod. He puts his hand on my cheek. "You were left drowning."
I nod again. "And you're struggling to breathe." I am. It's a constant struggle to stay near the surface. I have just enough air to stop me from totally going under, but not enough to thrive.
"So do it. Breathe. Just Breathe."
But Chris Shepherd is just as screwed up as Blythe is, he's just better at hiding it. He's built walls so high even his feelings for Blythe can't get past them. Blythe makes him feel something real, too real. Chris can't deal with anything other than being numb, so he closes himself off from Blythe. Even after a weekend of letting their guards down and really getting to know each other, Chris can't cope. So he runs. And he hides. And he gives Blythe the ultimate slap in the face.
I think it was at this point in the story where the tears flowed almost constantly. I was overcome with such a deep sadness for what Blythe had been through, and yet, I admired her strength and determination to become a new version of herself. Blythe and Chris have a connection that sizzles off the page. You can feel it in your fingertips as you turn the pages. This is one of those books that will stick with you. You'll be talking about it months later and recommending to your friends as a "must read". This book satisfies all your senses and leaves you wanting more. I hope we'll see more of Chris and Blythe.
My rating: 5 heart stopping, gut wrenching, mind-blown stars!
