Excellent self-assessment with plenty of pearls

Skin cancers only, sebKs, and related lesions only - doesn't cover scabies or inflammatory dermopathies, etc. Would be nice if additional chapters on "pink things," scalp and trichoscopy, SCC/AK, infections (scabies, etc). 5* for what it does cover - 4* because of what it doesn't.

The ethnobotanist co-author of Psilocybin: The Magic Mushroom Grower's Guide (not reviewed) puts forth the theory that magic mushrooms are the original ``tree of knowledge'' and that the general lack of psychedelic exploration is leading Western society toward eventual collapse or destruction--controversial statements, to say the least, though the argument's details often prove fascinating. In the beginning, McKenna tells us, there were protohumans with small brains and plenty of genetic competition, and what eventually separated the men from the apes was an enthusiasm for the hallucinogenic mushrooms that grew on the feces of local cattle. Claiming that psilocybin in the hominid diet would have enhanced eyesight, sexual enjoyment, and language ability and would have thereby placed the mushroom-eaters in the front lines of genetic evolution--eventually leading to hallucinogen-ingesting shamanistic societies, the ancient Minoan culture, and some Amazonian tribes today--McKenna also asserts that the same drugs are now outlawed in the US because of their corrosive effect on our male-dominated, antispiritual society. Unconsciously craving the vehicles by which our ancestors expanded their imaginations and found meaning in their lives, he says, we feast on feeble substitutes: coffee, sugar, and chocolate, which reinforce competition and aggressiveness; tobacco, which destroys our bodies; alcohol, whose abuse leads to male violence and female degradation; TV, which deadens our senses; and the synthetics--heroin, cocaine and their variations--which leave us victimized by our own addiction. On the other hand, argues McKenna, magic mushrooms, used in a spiritually enlightened, ritual manner, can open the door to greater consciousness and further the course of human evolution- -legalization of all drugs therefore is, he says, an urgent necessity. Fascinating read, a lot of speculation in my opinion.

I think Mckenna's theory is basically impossible to prove. Although his philosophy of human evolution is entertaining, don't look at this book as hard-science. Read it with a healthy dose of skepticism. I take it more as a free spirited critique of modern society, by a pro-natural- substances, hippie researcher. As for the value of psilosybin mushrooms, and cannabis use, I think there is great potential for positive benefits in society. Just take this with a grain of salt ,and as an entertaining read. Having said that, I believe that Terence Mckenna was a very intelligent, and pretty accurate critic of the status quo, oppressive society. I'm sure that as a researcher in the rest of his botany work, he was probably pretty spot-on, who knows. I urge anyone interested in him to listen to some of his talks on Youtube, to decide for yourself.

An Effusion of Esoteric Knowledge

This is the first book from Terrence McKenna I have read, but I have listened to a number of his lectures. As it stands, if I had to sum of the book in one phrase it would be, "An illicit peepshow of truth regarding our human culture." This book quite literally takes you all over the world, back and forth through time in 275 very novel pages. It employs the character of showing us how closely attached we, the human species, have been to drugs, or altered states of consciousness. There is also an attribute on how we as a species have developed society and religion as result to these experiences. This is a manifesto that beckons the need for further research into the areas of which McKenna vectors us. This book is also far much more than just a pontification about the history of drugs, it also delves deep into human culture and alternative views of how culture developed, especially from the feminine perspective. I have to say those who wish to study our human origins should read this; it is definitely an intriguing compilation, especially with his theories on the origins of consciousness. McKenna does not fail to display his erudition in this work, just as he does in his lectures, which is one of the reasons why he has been a preeminent hero of mine since I came into knowledge of him.

Most people are immediately going to reserve themselves in the position of dissenting, more or less because this is not what has been spoon fed to them by the conventional education machine. If you want the truth, or unbiased information, seek knowledge with an open mind, independently and from a multitude of perspectives. Especially, in the frame of the history, but even more so with his theory of how consciousness developed through prolonged exposure to entheogens. His theory for the catalyst for consciousness is very novel and pushes the paradigm on conventional theories. Nonetheless, McKenna's theory is highly controversial and many are likely to disagree without considering its probability. In actuality, Tim Leary attempted to study the effects of drugs on the mind while he was a Harvard professor, so these ideas are not intellectually destitute. Even if you disagree with everything he writes about, the subject matter will at least give you an adverse perspective that is in existence, but is not the orthodox.

In reference to the effects of drugs (natural drugs, not pharmaceuticals and alcohol) on the consciousness and the "journey" into your subconscious, I emphatically agree with McKenna and it is something that is simply experiential. It is an invigorating experience if you allow it to be, you must search within yourself to find answers. I personally like McKenna's rules for experiencing entheogens (as evident on pg. 248), "one sits down, one shuts up and one pays attention"-especially alone in the dark, no TV and no radio. It may not be for all, but it is quite effective for the psyche and intellect. Unfortunately, do to the politics of the scholarly realm and the laws from the "drug war" his theories will merely lie in ruin as an anecdotal hypothesis, but has much potentiality for a concrete conclusion.

The only reason I did not give this book five stars is due several things I disagree with McKenna on. Throughout this book, and his lectures, he seems to advocate a very socialistic and communist lifestyle, which to me, politically is an issue of dissonance. With this subject I guess we differ on a polarity, but I still enjoy his very eloquent philosophy. At times he also references the "barriers" that we create to create individual territory, and that we would be wiser to dissolve those and live communal lives. I like capitalism, the harder you work the more capital you receive; in a socialist society those who work hard gain nothing, because everything is of neutral division, and in the end it stifles ingenuity and innovation; and, in the same system the laziest are parasites that reap the rewards. Along with those ideas, he also bends over backwards to force a square dowel into a circular hole, and because of this there are times that makes it hard to concur with him. There are also periods in his book that there exists not enough evidence for the clarity of his postulants.

Here are some quotes I found resonance with:
Pg. 147 "Wife beating without alcohol is like a circus without lions." - So true, but we find that marijuana, an innocuous substance is outlawed.
Pg. 148 "Yet how can we explain the legal toleration for alcohol, the most destructive of all intoxicants, and the almost frenzied efforts to repress nearly all other drugs?"
Pg. 163 "The "recreational" context for substance use, as currently understood in the United States, is an atmosphere that trivializes the cognitive impact of the substance used."
Pg. 272 "If mere preaching of virtue could provide the answer, then we would have arrived at the threshold of angelic existence some time ago. If mere legislation of virtue were answer, we would have learned that a long time ago."

In conclusion, it is odious and criminal for me to desire and endeavor to experience mushrooms or marijuana in my own home, but it is ok for America to line up at the pharmacy for their $4 monthly prescriptions for various absurdities; and aside to that, the most corrosive substance, alcohol, in society is ubiquitously supported and served as a nuance of fermented passion, and because of this, the atrocities that it induces America retains a superficial relationship with. - D.R.Thomas

Brilliant thoughts, jumps to conclusions and solid social criticism

This book is an entertaining read and a source of valuable food for thought, but, at the same time, has to be taken with a huge grain of salt. I can recommend reading it, but reading it critically, which is, I assume, what Mckenna would have wanted you to do anyway. He is interested in a variety of topics all related to the use of drugs in human history.

One of his basic theories is that the consumption of psilocybin-containing mushrooms accelerated the evolution of the human mind. First of all, doesn't that sound a bit like Lamarkism? Well, on the surface it does, but there are serious academic biologists who have recently suggested that biological and cultural evolution (such as taking up the use of psychedelic mushrooms) can interact in interesting ways. The "Baldwin Effect" is what is potentially at play here, the phenomenon that phenotypical modifications (psilocybin induced brain states), while not directly affecting genes, can lead the evolutionary pathway in a certain direction. Acquired phenotypic modifications of the brain come first, and the genotype can catch up later. An excellent outline of these extensions of classic evolutionary theory can be found in Jablonka and Lamb's "Evolution in Four Dimensions". Is this to say that I am convinced that things happened how Mckenna describes them? No, but it is an interesting suggestion, and not at all scientifically ridiculous.

Mckenna then goes on to describe how, in his opinion, the shamanic, hallucinogen-literate societies of the late paleolithic were transformed into the current consumerist, hallucinogen-illiterate, drug consuming, but at the same time drug prosecuting and demonizing societies. And, he argues that the change went hand in hand with a change from friendly partnership societies to ego and power driven dominator societies. Unfortunately, in this part of the book, Mckenna is often too sloppy, even for a book which is obviously meant to be leaning out of the window with speculation. While there is ancient art clearly depicting mushrooms, he sees them almost everywhere, like in an ancient god's round hat and in an upward expanding palace column.

The later chapters are again a strength of "Food of the Gods", where Mckenna gives an outline of the drug policies of the last several hundred years. Of course the historical sources are much more abundant about this period as opposed to pre-history, and Mckenna knows them well. He rightfully angrily describes the incredible hypocrisy which has harmed the lives of so many people. And, again, he asks: what does it say about a society if mind-numbing drugs like alcohol and television are encouraged, but mind-expanding drugs like psilocybin and LSD are criminalized? Why is coffee, which makes you nervous and work harder, found in every office, but cannabis, which makes you contemplative and relaxed, officially banned? Wouldn't a mushroom-using society make very different decisions as opposed to our current tabako-smoking, alcohol drinking society? And, don't our society's alcohol and nicotine inspired decisions often involve wife-beating and drunk driving on a small scale, and war, social injustice and environmental destruction on a large scale? These are viable questions, and Mckenna deserves credit for asking them in an eloquent and readable manner.

From a mile in the air, the coast of Vaneo, with its crystal blue ocean and pristine sandy beaches, looked like paradise.

At twenty-four, Vanessa Reynolds had lived on more continents and in more cities than most people visited in a lifetime—typical story for an army brat—but she was hoping that this small principality on the Mediterranean coast would become her forever home.

"This is it, Mia," she whispered to her six-month-old daughter, who after spending the majority of the thirteen-hour flight alternating between fits of restless sleep and bouts of screaming bloody murder, had finally succumbed to sheer exhaustion and now slept peacefully in her car seat. The plane made its final descent to the private airstrip where they would be greeted by Gabriel, Vanessa's…it seemed silly and a little juvenile to call him her boyfriend, considering he was fifty-six. But he wasn't exactly her fiance either. At least, not yet. When he asked her to marry him she hadn't said yes, but she hadn't said no either. That's what this visit would determine, if she wanted to marry a man who was not only thirty-two years her senior and lived halfway around the world, but a king.

She gazed out the window, and as the buildings below grew larger, nervous kinks knotted her insides.

Vanessa, what have you gotten yourself into this time?

That's what her father would probably say if she'd had the guts to tell him the truth about this visit. He would tell her that she was making another huge mistake. And, okay, so maybe she hadn't exactly had the best luck with men since…well, puberty. But this time it was different.

Her best friend Jessy had questioned her decision as well. "He seems nice now," she'd said as she sat on Vanessa's bed, watching her pack, "but what if you get there and he turns out to be an overbearing tyrant?"

"So I'll come home."

"What if he holds you hostage? What if he forces you to marry him against your will? I've heard horror stories. They treat women like second-class citizens."

"That's the other side of the Mediterranean. Varieo is on the European side."

Jessy frowned. "I don't care, I still don't like it."

It's not as if Vanessa didn't realize she was taking a chance. In the past this sort of thing had backfired miserably, but Gabriel was a real gentleman. He genuinely cared about her. He would never steal her car and leave her stranded at a diner in the middle of the Arizona desert. He wouldn't open a credit card in her name, max it out and decimate her good credit. He wouldn't pretend to like her just so he could talk her into writing his American history term paper then dump her for a cheerleader.

And he certainly would never knock her up then disappear and leave her and his unborn child to fend for themselves.

The private jet hit a pocket of turbulence and gave a violent lurch, jolting Mia awake. She blinked, her pink bottom lip began to tremble, then she let out an ear-piercing wail that only intensified the relentless throb in Vanessa's temples.

"Shh, baby, it's okay," Vanessa cooed, squeezing her chubby fist. "We're almost there."

The wheels of the plane touched down and Vanessa's heart climbed up into her throat. She was nervous and excited and relieved, and about a dozen other emotions too jumbled to sort out. Though they had chatted via Skype almost daily since Gabriel left Los Angeles, she hadn't been face-to-face with him in nearly a month. What if he took one look at her rumpled suit, smudged eyeliner and stringy, lifeless hair and sent her right back to the U.S.?

That's ridiculous, she assured herself as the plane bumped along the runway to the small, private terminal owned by the royal family. She had no illusions about how the first thing that had attracted Gabriel to her in the posh Los Angeles hotel where she worked as an international hospitality agent was her looks. Her beauty—as well as her experience living abroad—was what landed her the prestigious position at such a young age. It had been an asset and, at times, her Achilles' heel. But Gabriel didn't see her as arm dressing. They had become close friends. Confidants. He loved her, or so he claimed, and she had never known him to be anything but a man of his word.

There was just one slight problem. Though she respected him immensely and loved him as a friend, she couldn't say for certain if she was in love with him—a fact Gabriel was well aware of. Hence the purpose of this extended visit. He felt confident that with time—six weeks to be exact, since that was the longest leave she could take from work—Vanessa would grow to love him. He was sure that they would share a long and happy life together. And the sanctity of marriage was not something that Gabriel took lightly.

His first marriage had spanned three decades, and he claimed it would have lasted at least three more if cancer hadn't snatched his wife from him eight months ago.

Mia wailed again, fat tears spilling down her chubby, flushed cheeks. The second the plane rolled to a stop Vanessa turned on her cell phone and sent Jessy a brief text, so when she woke up she would know they had arrived safely. She then unhooked the straps of the plush, designer car seat Gabriel had provided and lifted her daughter out. She hugged Mia close to her chest, inhaling that sweet baby scent.

"We're here, Mia. Our new life starts right now."

According to her father, Vanessa had turned exercising poor judgment and making bad decisions into an art form, but things were different now. She was different, and she had her daughter to thank for that. Enduring eight months of pregnancy alone had been tough, and the idea of an infant counting on her for its every need had scared the crap out of her. There had been times when she wasn't sure she could do it, if she was prepared for the responsibility, but the instant she laid eyes on Mia, when the doctor placed her in Vanessa's arms after a grueling twenty-six hours of labor, she fell head over heels in love. For the first time in her life, Vanessa felt she finally had a purpose. Taking care of her daughter, giving her a good life, was now her number one priority.

What she wanted more than anything was for Mia to have a stable home with two parents, and marrying Gabriel would assure her daughter privileges and opportunities beyond Vanessa's wildest dreams. Wouldn't that be worth marrying a man who didn't exactly…well, rev her engine? Wasn't respect and friendship more important anyway?

Vanessa peered out the window just in time to see a limo pull around the building and park a few hundred feet from the plane.

Gabriel, she thought, with equal parts relief and excitement. He'd come to greet her, just as he'd promised.

The flight attendant appeared beside her seat, gesturing to the carry-on, overstuffed diaper bag and purse in a pile at Vanessa's feet. "Ms. Reynolds, can I help you with your things?"

"That would be fantastic," Vanessa told her, raising her voice above her daughter's wailing. She grabbed her purse and hiked it over her shoulder while the attendant grabbed the rest, and as Vanessa rose from her seat for the first time in several hours, her cramped legs screamed in protest. She wasn't one to lead an idle lifestyle. Her work at the hotel kept her on her feet eight to ten hours a day, and Mia kept her running during what little time they had to spend together. There were diaper changes and fixing bottles, shopping and laundry. On a good night she might manage a solid five hours of sleep. On a bad night, hardly any sleep at all.

When she met Gabriel she hadn't been out socially since Mia was born. Not that she hadn't been asked by countless men at the hotel—clients mostly—but she didn't believe in mixing business with pleasure, or giving the false impression that her hospitality extended to the bedroom. But when a king asked a girl out for drinks, especially one as handsome and charming as Gabriel, it was tough to say no. And here she was, a few months later, starting her life over. Again.

Maybe.

The pilot opened the plane door, letting in a rush of hot July air that carried with it the lingering scent of the ocean. He nodded sympathetically as Mia howled.

Vanessa stopped at the door and looked back to her seat. "Oh, shoot, I'm going to need the car seat for my daughter."

"I'll take care of it, ma'am," the pilot assured her, with a thick accent.

She thanked him and descended the steps to the tarmac, so relieved to be on steady ground she could have dropped to her knees and kissed it.

The late morning sun burned her scalp and stifling heat drifted up from the blacktop as the attendant led her toward the limo. As they approached, the driver stepped out and walked around to the back door. He reached for the handle, and the door swung open, and Vanessa's pulse picked up double time. Excitement buzzed through her as one expensive looking shoe—Italian, she was guessing—hit the pavement, and as its owner unfolded himself from the car she held her breath…then let it out in a whoosh of disappointment. This man had the same long, lean physique and chiseled features, the deep-set, expressive eyes, but he was not Gabriel.

Even if she hadn't done hours of research into the country's history, she would have known instinctively that the sinfully attractive man walking toward her was Prince Marcus Salvatora, Gabriel's son. He looked exactly like the photos she'd seen of him—darkly intense, and far too serious for a man of only twenty-eight. Dressed in gray slacks and a white silk shirt that showcased his olive complexion and crisp, wavy black hair, he looked more like a GQ cover model than a future leader.

She peered around him to the interior of the limo, hoping to see someone...

The cover is misleading but the best thing about the book.

This story was wonderful. I couldn't put it down until I finished reading it. Now, here I am at almost 2:30 in the morning thinking "What the heck" - actully many 4-letter words went through mind! - I used hard earned money to purchase this book, spent hours reading it..And the author ended the book like that?!?!?!!

The most captivating personal account ever of an intimate world of endless devotion to Love.

I dove into American Monk knowing a bit about what I was getting into, thanks to the chapter samples the author posts on his Facebook page.
What I didn't realize was how deeply this book was going to pull me in and keep me there in the enchanting, deeply moving world of the Benedictine Monks of St. Joseph's Abbey in colorful New Orleans.

The author tells of his life as a Benedictine Monk, and begs readers to look at their own perceptions of the world around them and ask themselves if there are ways they could love each other better. Through work and prayer, Becket and the other monks of St. Joseph's Abbey navigate the emotional waters of the path to Eternal Love.

What entrenched me in this story on such a soul-deep level was the universal goal of all the monks. American Monk does not simply speak on a Christian level. It speaks of love and strife on a human level, the way the monks work with each other to resolve conflicts, to cherish small blessings, to endure exhaustion, to deepen their own personal relationships with Eternal Love in so many ways. Every description of Gregorian chant flows effortlessly from the text to the reader's mind. Every monk in the story springs to life with their unique personalities and quirks. Every moment in the monastery is written in such an intricate, immersive voice that I almost feel like I've been there and sang in the choir as one of the brothers.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a spiritual journey into a world we rarely get to glimpse from the inside, and anyone with a passion for music or self-improvement. You don't have to be Christian to adore this story and grow through the messages Becket learns in the monastery. American Monk is vivid, enthralling, and wholly moving.

Quite frankly a miraculous revelation in modern day literature...

I bought American Monk by Becket not truly knowing what I'd find inside or if it would be relevant to me and my current life. How wrong I was.
American Monk is relevant to everyone if they simply pick a copy of the book up and peruse it in their own free time.
All my life I have traveled along feeling seperated from society, different, trying forever to find myself, answers, usually unheard. With Becket's tender reflections I have been forced to study myself,to reach deep within and to listen, to me, for once not to everyone outside, to say an epiphany occured is putting it mildly. Becket has helped me focus on me and my relationship with me, my journal is now reflective and the questions I could never get answers for have been finally answered. Even if you don't lead a religious life style, even if you refuse Gods knock on your door, this book will open many doors for you, many beautiful thoughtful heart breaking moments that make you realize how wonderful life truly is, how blessed you are, if you simply open up to the idea of it all. Namaste my friends.

I truly wish this book had existed when I was in school. If you want a painless introduction to the very core of computer science, This is it!
The concepts that are explained in the book are useful for any level, from beginner to advanced in my opinion. It has helped me tremendously to strengthen concepts I had trouble with in the past, and the author manages to explain it in a way that's light and entertaining at the same time.
I'm particularly glad that the author starts from the ground up, with a gentle introduction to the Maths you will need. Very few books (If any) take the trouble of dedicating a couple of chapters to Math alone before diving into how it's used in Computer Science.
The title of the book perfectly summarizes what the author managed to successfully do, which is to 'Distill' every CS concept and present it in a way that's brain-friendly. In Summary, the best introduction to CS you will ever find.

An easy-to-follow guide through those fundamental principles of computer science that are only hazily grasped or completely unknown to us non-programmers who nevertheless program.

Purists may complain about the author's use of emojis. For only a few hours reading it is remarkable for how much it contains.

I would recommend the book for students of any discipline, including computer science, casual or professional coders in any programming language.

About the Author

James Penner is Professor of Law at University College London. He previously taught at London School of Economics for seven years. His primary research interests are the law of trusts, the philosophy of property, and the philosophy of law. He is author of The Law of Trusts 8e (OUP, 2012) and The Idea of Property in Law (OUP, 1997), and co-editor (with David Schiff and Richard Nobles) of Introduction to Jurisprudence and Legal Theory: Commentary and Materials (OUP, 2002).

Emmanuel Melissaris is a Senior Lecturer in Law at the London School of Economics. His research interests lie mainly in the philosophy of law and criminal law theory. He is the author of Ubiquitous Law: Legal Theory and the Space for Legal Theory (Ashgate, 2009).
