can't wait to read next installment of blood queen if you like rick riordan's books you will like this.

Brilliant follow up to Blood Song

Five months after Blood Song finished, Zeraphina is still in Pergamia and has been extremely busy. Training with her trusty bow and arrow - as well as her drain cat, Leap and loyal eagle, Griffin - Rodden has been trying to get Zeraphina prepared for fighting the Lharmellians. With her seventeenth birthday approaching, there's more to worry about than just the Harmings - her mother, Renata, is finding potential Princes who would be willing to marry the somewhat wayward princess. Trying to fight both her destiny and the blood tie to Lharmell, Zeraphina and Rodden set out to collect supplies for a weapon deadly to all with Lharmellian blood.

Zeraphina is one of those heroines that make me like her more with every word I read about her. She's fiercely loyal and smart. Her bloodthirstiness (and not just the thirst-quenching kind) is somehow admirable. I adored how she took care of Rodden, both physically and emotionally. She's brave and even when things are at their most dire, she's starting to behave like a potential queen and is looking out for those who can't look out for themselves.

I loved the relationship that has been brewing between Rodden and Zeraphina since the first time we met the King's Advisor in Blood Song. They have chemistry but with the class system and Renata so violently opposed to their relationship it feels like they are doomed from the start. Regardless of the potential (and probably) doomed ending, I love how these two interact. They're not all rainbows and sunshine (however there is a cute fluffy bunny or two). Their world is hard and dangerous but throughout everything I love the way Zeraphina and Rodden treat each other - it's not often kind but always considerate.

This book developed Rodden's history fantastically. As he and Zeraphina travel the lands gathering supplies for their secret weapon we get to see just who Rodden was before he became Prince Amis' best friend. The view of the country and the people who live there added an extra something to this novel and the world in which it exists.

Blood Storm is a fantastic fantasy novel set in a world where the blood-sucking creatures are so much more than your typical vampires. The characters are interesting and the plot gets thicker and more fascinating with every twist. After the way this book finished I am on the edge of my seat with anticipation. Blood Queen will be released sometime in 2013. I can not wait to get my hands on a copy!

A fantastic and mesmerizing sequel!

Wow, I almost don't even know what to say. I'm just really impressed and shocked right now. I loved the first novel in the series Blood Song, but man... Blood Storm definitely topped it! Everything I hoped to find in this sequel was there and a whole lot more. It was all freaking awesome, and much praise to the author for writing such a fantastic and mesmerizing read!

Blood Storm begins five months where Blood Song left off. Zeraphina and Rodden are still bickering companions, and Rodden is as mysterious as ever. But they continue to look out for one another. After everything they went through, I thought their relationship would have evolved into something slightly more romantic by now. However, that wasn't the case at all. Zeraphina obviously has feelings for Rodden. She won't tell him, though, especially since he acts more distance towards her for reasons not even she can figure out. It may have been frustrating for her, but as a reader, I didn't find it frustrating in the least. I loved that there were plenty of interactions and development between them. What I realized is that they didn't need to be in a romantic relationship for us readers to know that they both had strong feelings for each other and that they would do anything to protect the other. It really made the wait for even just a hint of romance much more rewarding and satisfying.

When I finished Blood Song, one of the things I wanted to know more about was Rodden's past. All the answers about him I was looking for were eventually revealed in this book. But what got to me was how truly heartbreaking his past was. He suffers from tons of guilt and regret. And it explained why he kept secrets and why he tried to stay emotionally distant from Zeraphina. He's an amazing person with so much depth to him, and I just wanted to comfort him right along with Zeraphina. Not only was Rodden's past dark, but the entire novel felt a whole lot darker than Blood Song. Zeraphina and Rodden went through many terrifying ordeals in this novel. It wasn't an easy journey, and they had to work hard to survive and keep each other safe. Zeraphina proved yet again how strong and determined she is. She's an awesome heroine that I admire. I really just adored both these characters; they no doubt make a perfect team.

I'm already counting down the days till the final book Blood Queen. Blood Storm was completely captivating and addicting, and definitely one of my favorite books and sequels this year. It had everything I loved about Blood Song and other aspects that made me love it even more. It was darker, filled with nonstop action and adventure, and had a believable and gradually developing romance. And unlike Blood Song's ending, this ending pretty much killed me! It was a huge cliffhanger! I have no idea how what happened is going to be fixed, but it makes me desperately want the next book right NOW. Seriously, a wonderful series that I can't recommend enough.

Top-Notch Guide to Understanding the D5500

This is not an owners manual, but a great instructional manual on how to actually use the myriad features of the D5500 to take photos. Well thought out and presented in a manner that most amateur shutterbugs can understand. Wish I'd have had something like this when I started out in photography 45 years ago!

He just changes the name of the camera in title and the text is 95% identical. Easy money. All the Kindle editions of the amateur cameras have 288 pages, the more complicated cameras 312. See any pattern in here? Research the Internet about dslr photography and leaf through the manual if you need it. It's free!

Very disappointed in this book

Very disappointed in this book. I already had purchased the same volume for the 3200 (Nikon D3200: From Snapshots to Great Shots). When I upgraded my camera to the D5500 recently, I placed a pre-order for the new upcoming book for the 5500. It arrived yesterday and it is almost entirely a word for word copy of the 3200 version with only a few minor changes here and there. I expected at least some new information relevant to this camera over the other, even if the cameras are similar. I would never have purchased this edition had I ever dreamed that it would be a virtual copy of the first, substituting the number 5500 for 3200 everywhere it appeared and little else other than a new picture on the cover. What a waste of money! The book itself is good, but who would have thought that they would repackage the original as a new book with a slightly different title. Shame, shame, shame!

Second, the book is unique in its holistic approach to the negotiation process. Other books often focus narrowly either on negotiation or on contract law. Furthermore, the books on negotiation tend to focus on what happens at the bargaining table without addressing the performance of an agreement. These books make the mistaken assumption that success is determined by evaluating the negotiation rather than evaluating performance of the agreement. Similarly, the books on contract law tend to focus on the legal requirements for a contract to be valid, thus giving short shrift to the negotiation process that precedes the contract and to the performance that follows.

In the real world, the contracting process is not divided into independent phases. What happens during a negotiation has a profound impact on the contract and on the performance that follows. The contract’s legal content should reflect the realities of what happened at the bargaining table and the performance that is to follow. This book, in contrast to others, covers the entire negotiation process in chronological order beginning with your decision to negotiate and continuing through the evaluation of your performance as a negotiator.

A business executive in one of the negotiation seminars the author teaches as a University of Michigan professor summarized negotiation as follows: “Life is negotiation!” No one ever stated it better. As a mother with young children and as a company leader, the executive realized that negotiations are pervasive in our personal and business lives. About the Author

George Siedel is the Williamson Family Professor of Business Administration and the Thurnau Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan. He teaches negotiation at Michigan's Ross School of Business and around the world to business leaders, entrepreneurs, attorneys, physicians, athletic directors, and judges. He recently developed a free negotiation app: negotiationplanner.com.

Professor Siedel completed graduate studies at the University of Michigan and Cambridge University. He served as a visiting professor at Stanford University and Harvard University and as a Visiting Scholar at Berkeley. As a Fulbright Scholar, he held a Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Professor Siedel has received several national research awards including the Maurer Award, the Ralph Bunche Award, and the Hoeber Award. He has also received many teaching awards, including the 2014 Executive Program Professor of the Year Award from a consortium of 36 leading universities committed to international education.

An excellent resource, not merely for business, but for life!

This is an excellent book on negotiation. I am taking Professor Siedel's MOOC course online, and the text is directly aligned with his instruction. I particularly like this text because it is clear, concise, and methodical. Although negotiation can seem complex, this text breaks down key strategies point-by-point, and these strategies for negotiating can be applied in every facet of life. This is a quick read, and an excellent resource, not merely for business, but for life.

Pretty Solid Intro...just redundant if taking coursera

The book as a standalone is a great resource. Paired with the coursera course, it's a little redundant. I would say choose one over the other unless you are paying for the certificate. I enjoyed the book and felt like there were some great, high level ideas I can apply in business and in life. I just couldn't stand hearing it repeated at such a slow pace during the course. I actually sped it up to 2X the natural speed because I couldn't stand how slow he talks. He seems like a nice guy and knows his stuff, just talks to slow. So again, I give the book a five. I just think it drops in value if you are ALSO taking the course.

Must-read book! Negotiating for Success is major life skill and this book shows the way

This is an excellent negotiation book. I encourage you to read the book in conjunction with the MOOC that Professor's Siedel created on "Succesful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills" in Coursera. Anyway, the book is a great read and of highly practical use by itself as well.

The book is unique in its organization by covering each step in the negotiation process chronologically from preparation through performance. Accordingly, the book is organized as follows:

Unit I: Prepare to Negotiate
Unit II: Use Key Strategies and Tactics During Negotiations
Unit III: Close Your Negotiation With a Binding Contract
Unit IV: Complete Your End Game
Appendix A: Negotiation Planning Checklist
Appendix B: Example of a Completed Negotiated Planning Checklist
Appendix C: Assess Your Negotiating Style

The chronological order of the book made it easy to understand and each chapter has a "Key takeaway" summarizing the most important concepts covered. Further, the book provides concrete examples and case studies to show how the concepts are applied in practice and is written in a style which provides deep insights through plain language.

I particularly enjoyed the Negotiation Style Assessment and the Chapter on the "Use of Psychological Tools" for negotiation. These set of tools are applicable to many other areas besides negotiation, such as decision making and litigation.

This is a great book. I bought it for my kids and they have enjoyed it very much. It's full of a lot of information. Great learning for young children.

In the Ballantine publicity department, we have an informal book club. It usually gets started is when one of us reads a book, loves it, and then passes it on to a friend in the department. Once one person has read a book and loves it, then we ALL have to read it too! THE POWER OF ONE by Bryce Courtenay was one of those books. You may have seen the movie with Morgan Freeman, but I urge you to read the book because it was much better than the movie. It's a coming-of-age story of a young boy in South Africa. He has such a hard time of things! He's picked on as a young boy, then he befriends an older man who teaches him the wonders of life. The book is beautifully written, and the story is extremely compelling. If you liked Anna Quindlen's OBJECT LESSONS or Edward Albee's A DEATH IN THE FAMILY or John Irving's A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY, you will love this book too.

My wife and I were skiing and someone said that this was their favorite book. We spent about 6 months reading it aloud together - reading on your own you will finish this book much quicker. We loved it. I was quite impressed with how realistic many aspects were and assume it is like Lost names by Richard Kim in which he incorporated much of his growing up into the novel. The central theme - that you can do it - is on the weaker side, but it is endearing as this young boy matures throughout often relying on himself. I highly recommend this book for high school and older. There were several scenes that might be difficult for younger children.
What sticks out to me the most in this novel are the secondary characters. I love Peekay and Doc but Big Hettie, Hoppie, the Judge stick out. They are only in the novel for a few dozen pages but are so well realized that when things happen to them you care.
I highly recommend this book.

"Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, little six-year-old Peekay learns that small can beat big. Armed with this knowledge, he resolves to take on the injustices of his country, and sets his heart on becoming the welterweight champion of the world."
Young white boy who endures humiliation and bullying in African residential school thru WW II. It demonstrates how good people come into one's life to mentor & love a child, forge his life for good. Included are the gardener (a Jew), a retired boxer (black), and piano teacher. The arts and the sport of boxing give him strength. He experienced violence daily because of his background.

Story Telling at its Best

The Power of One is the story of Peekay, a young boy growing up in South Africa during World War II. After being tormented by an older bully and his stooges during his initial year of boarding school (why would anyone send their small children to boarding school--if you've been exposed to any literature at all you know boarding school is clearly a horrible experience at best), six-year-old Peekay determines to become the welter-weight boxing champion of the world. With hard work and mentoring from some unique and genuine individuals, Peekay is driven by his ultimate goals. In the meantime, Peekay transcends local racial strife to become beloved by all races in South Africa. Peekay is a true "outlier" as described by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers. He is also likable and great fun to cheer on.

The writing is splendid. In a single scene, Courtenay takes the reader through a multitude of emotions without feeling manipulated. The book is full of humor, love, sorrow, pain and joy and still doesn't feel contrived. The characters are unique and intriguing--Peekay is coached, taught and enlightened by the grizzled African criminal; the German ex-patriot professor of music and the beautiful Jewish intellectual. People are simply drawn to Peekay's sincerity, determination and potential. He is fiercely loyal to those he loves. There is something magical about this boy.

The setting is exotic and teaming with stories of racism, adventures and chances. Courtenay is, quite simply, a natural and gifted story teller.

About the Author
Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri, in 1835, and died in Redding, Connecticut in 1910. Although he left school at twelve when his father died, he was eventually awarded honorary degrees from Yale University, the University of Missouri, and Oxford University. His career encompassed such varied occupations as printer, Mississippi riverboat pilot, journalist, travel writer, and publisher. He made fortunes from his writing, but toward the end of his life he went bankrupt and undertook a round-the-world lecture tour in order to pay off his creditors. He lives in American letters as one of our greatest humorists and novelists, the writer whom William Dean Howells called “the Lincoln of our literature.”

Justin Kaplan is the author of Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award; Mark Twain and His World; Lincoln Steffens; and Walt Whitman: A Life. In 1985, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His final book was When the Astors Owned New York. He died in 2014.
