And the low boom, when it came again, seemed to come from the clock. He reached out and touched it gently, but it floated off the stand at his touch and bounced around slowly on the floor. And when he picked it up again it had stopped, nor would shaking start it. He checked the electric clock in the kitchen. This also said six o'clock, but the sweep hand did not move. In his living room the radio clock said six, but the second hand seemed stationary. That was only the beginning. Worse things were to come -- much, much worse . . .

R. A. Lafferty (1914-2002) was a writer and retired newspaperman in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has written many stories and several books, including "Archipelago", "The Devil Is Dead", "Not to Mention Camels", and "Ringing Changes".

More lucid than most Lafferty stories

Short and sweet: The story itself is a short and engaging piece. It is remarkable that it was free. Lafferty is a little hard to come by.
The Kindle Version was well done without all the wonky formatting problems that many other free Kindle books have. I really enjoyed this and its free!

My first R.A. Lafferty experience

It's late and I'm tired so I'll be brief.
I had never heard of R.A. Lafferty's work until by chance, I read an old interview of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen. Anyone familiar with him knows he has a pension for being cryptic and satirically witty in interviews. Fagen didn't directly mention Lafferty by name, but mentioned using the Ktistek machine, a subject of Lafferty's book "Arrive At Easterwine." In my quest to find out what this "Ktistek" machine was, I found Lafferty.
Curious about Easterwine, I did some research. I found out that it was a very difficult read, requiring some to reread, just to get a grasp of the complex use of metaphor Lafferty uses in the book. Some readers gave up trying to understand it entirely! Not wanting to order and wait for a printed book, or diving into something that would require Cliff's Notes to understand, I decided to get my feet wet with this free eBook of Lafferty's, The Six Fingers of Time.
It was a most enjoyable short read, as I read it in about an hour (or one minute, if I possessed the power that protagonist Charles Vincent had)! Lafferty's descriptions of time slowed to a crawl were vivid and colorful, humorous and creepy. He definitely has a most unorthodox prose, unlike anyone I have ever read. You have to pay attention during dialog between characters. They can blur a bit, and the characters speak in a way that isn't particularly conversational. In such a short book, Lafferty creates a very deep landscape about the nature of time and eternity.
If you are unfamiliar with R.A. Lafferty, I would recommend getting this book. You can read it in the time it would take you to eat lunch. It's an easy read, and you can't beat the price!
