Evi Nemeth has retired from the Computer Science faculty at the University of Colorado. She is currently exploring the Pacific on her 40-foot sailboat named Wonderland. Garth Snyder has worked at NeXT and Sun and holds a BS in Engineering from Swarthmore College and an MD and an MBA from the University of Rochester. Trent R. Hein is the co-founder of Applied Trust, a company that provides IT infrastructure consulting services. Trent holds a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. Ben Whaley is the Director of Enterprise Architecture at Applied Trust. Ben earned a BS in Computer Science from the University of Colorado. He is an expert in storage management, virtualization, and web infrastructure.

Best Linux/UNIX Book I've Read. Ever.

There's a reason this book receives glowing reviews, and it doesn't have much to do with what's in it. It has to do with what's not in it.

I am so accustomed to really miserable, overly verbose tech writing by people who are clearly not good writers that finding this book blew me away. In an era of disposable and free blog writing, I forgot how good tech writing can be. We need more writing like this. I bought the paperback and the Kindle edition. First time, ever, that I bought a book twice. When they come out with a new edition, I'll buy that one, too. Another first.

Tech book publishers, take note of why this book works:

- There aren't equally-weighted discussions about every single option available.
- There's not a lot of BS filler.
- There's historical context which aids in memorization. Stories teach.
- There's a lot of "do this, here's why" aka "best practices".
- There aren't pages and pages of useless code that nobody cares about.
- There are no gimmicks (free CD/DVDs and the like) attached to the book.
- The writing style assumes you are busy and treats your time as valuable.

In this book is practical wisdom and tested/tried techniques to get you started on most things you will do as an admin. The authors know you have Google, and they don't kill you wasting your time. They give you a description of the technology, the most appropriate way(s) to handle it (with syntax), how to think about it, and how it differs (if it differs) between versions of Linux/UNIX.

Not your average Linux book.

Also not designed to teach you how to run Linux in your basement (but you can take everything they say and still apply yourself to that if you choose.) I was almost scared off when I read that in the preface, since I didn't have large systems to test on. Fear not however, the book is a masterpiece and even non-pro users will find themselves discovering the power of Unix/Linux, and I mean the full power, they don't leave many stones unturned in this book.

However this book is targeted to larger system deployments and real world large systems. Which is fantastic, everything to get Linux users to the 'next' level is here. IT/IS professionals who have for the most part mastered basic *Nix commands will find this book extraordinary. I have the e-book version of this, but I really needed to get the paper one too. That is how good this is, and I have read just about everything in it at this point.

The book is well laid out, unlike my review it stays focused within each section. So much content is in here I can't even pull out half of the parts I found useful so I won't even try.

If you're a Unix/Linux user (IT/IS pro), buy it. If you're learning how to walk in Linux, you might want to stay away for a little bit, though it does do a reasonable job of refreshing the memory of most users, there is not THAT much introductory level information in this book to get you all the way up to speed. If you're ambitious enough I guess a new user could make use of this book, but I would suggest reading other material before this.

Book good, kindle edition has flaws

I used and liked a much earlier edition of this book; the new one looks as good. The 4 stars is for the book, the Kindle edition would get 1-2 stars because of the following flaws:

1) The book contains many tables of text information. These were apparently formatted as images, or at least they are images in the Kindle edition. The result is that the tiny text cannot be magnified. Worse, the characters are a very light gray which is very difficult to read.

2) The newer go-to-page-number feature is not supported in this edition; perhaps the feature wasn't available at the time. Since the authors make many references to other page numbers, go-to-page-number is necessary.

I hope the publisher improves the Kindle edition; otherwise get the print version.

Very basic book that tries to cover much but is ...

Very basic book that tries to cover much but is mostly a quick run through most models. This book is for the very novice audience who havs no idea what marketing analytics is all about. It tells you about a model, gives you a name (e.g. Regression), followed by a paragraph of explanation and a very basic example. If you have any experience in the marketing field this book is not for you. It is mostly for undergraduate students (definitely not for graduate students). You can use it as a starting point to know what exists out there but don't think this book will take you into any depths into these models and you would not be able to really use these in real work situations.

This review is for all those first timers who have never experienced the world of analytics,the book starts off with basic concepts and build's you up for complex models.The models are explained in detail with case examples to help the reader get a deeper understanding of the models.Each concept of a chapter is supported by a real world case which helps the reader relate and retain the concepts learned.
I would highly recommend this book.

Great textbook for a Marketing Analytics course

I will approach this review from an academic angle and share my reactions to the book as I progressed from the first chapters towards the end.

The book starts with setting the ground on what Marketing Analytics is as a discipline and dives into different application areas of marketing analytics in the organization. The coverage of the topics in each chapter is self-explanatory with plenty of clearly explained concepts, acronyms and terminology every marketing professional uses and/or comes across every day. From Chapter 3 on, there are advanced concepts around segmentation and modeling which are demonstrated by data and excel based examples, which are very valuable for someone exposed to these techniques for the first time. Reader is guided through excel menus and options while the concept (such as regression, linear optimization etc.) is explained and results of the analysis tied to tangible outcomes. Throughout the book, there are callouts which provide examples (called Marketing Made Measurable) which give mini-cases which ground the concepts covered in each chapter to interesting examples from real life. This practical approach of the book is what makes this a great textbook for a curriculum which has a Marketing Analytics offering at the advanced undergraduate or entry graduate level.

I am giving 4 stars since the book is accomplishing a ton by providing a very wide coverage of all the possible topics which are traditionally embedded within the marketing analytics discipline, but as with any other such project, there is room to improve. A frequently hysterical confessional from a teen narrator who won't be able to convince readers he's as unlikable as he wants them to believe.

"I have no idea how to write this stupid book," narrator Greg begins. Without answering the obvious question—just why is he writing" this stupid book"?—Greg lets readers in on plenty else. His filmmaking ambitions. His unlikely friendship with the unfortunately short, chain-smoking, foulmouthed, African-American Earl of the title. And his unlikelier friendship with Rachel, the titular "dying girl." Punctuating his aggressively self-hating account with film scripts and digressions, he chronicles his senior year, in which his mother guilt-trips him into hanging out with Rachel, who has acute myelogenous leukemia. Almost professionally socially awkward, Greg navigates his unwanted relationship with Rachel by showing her the films he's made with Earl, an oeuvre begun in fifth grade with their remake of Aguirre, Wrath of God. Greg's uber-snarky narration is self-conscious in the extreme, resulting in lines like, "This entire paragraph is a moron." Debut novelist Andrews succeeds brilliantly in painting a portrait of a kid whose responses to emotional duress are entirely believable and sympathetic, however fiercely he professes his essential crappiness as a human being.

Though this novel begs inevitable thematic comparisons to John Green's The Fault in Our Stars (2011), it stands on its own in inventiveness, humor and heart.

Refreshingly Honest and Told with an Authentic Voice

It's been a loooong while since I've sat and read a book cover to cover in one sitting, throughout one day, and this was the book that got me to do it again. ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL is an interesting debut novel centered on a teenage boy and the girl he (re) befriends after finding out she's dying from leukemia. I say 'interesting' because it handles the seriousness of the topic with a kind of brute honesty and a side of humor (sometimes awkward teenage boy humor) which I wasn't sure I was expecting. All around, the story didn't follow any easily identifiable trope or plot, which was refreshing for some reason (and I've read a few other stories about teens dying from illnesses, so I wouldn't necessary call them contrived either, but maybe more emotionally moving?).

In this tale, we see everything through the eyes of the narrator Greg Gaines. He's funny, but awkward, shy, and wants nothing else but to live on the fringe in a kind of unnoticeable, unregistered citizen--a kind of high school drifter who doesn't want to make waves, but also doesn't want to be entirely ignored and thus, he sort of befriends everyone--without actually befriending anyone, really. If I sound confused, it's because this book so accurately describes the microcosm of high school and it's bizarre blurred hierarchy. Greg doesn't fit into any particularly easy labels though he's a Jewish kid with siblings he almost never speaks to, one weird friend he makes (seemingly bad/misunderstood) movies with, and is painfully inept when it comes to girls. He has a fairly self-deprecating sense of humor, though you do kind of want to tell him to not be so down on himself, but for the most part, he doesn't *feel* particularly lacking in confidence (though I would not describe him as especially 'confident' by any stretch of the imagination).

But anyway, straight away, you get hooked into the story by Greg's voice. It's fairly unique and you kind of feel like you're reading his diary (if boys kept diaries). The story itself evolves and Greg grows in small, but meaningful ways through his friendship with Rachel (the 'Dying Girl' referenced in the title). Interestingly, it seems his BFF Earl is actually a bit of Touchstone for Greg--which I found surprising but simultaneously really cool because he's kind of untypical with a bit of a rough family life/backstory.

I'm finding it kind of hard to really describe how I felt about this book aside from the voice was really engaging and kept me going throughout the entire story. The story itself, while not exactly a surprise, unfolds in what feels like a natural pace and whatever expectations you might have of a book about teenagers facing death, you might find it in this, or you might not. But you will probably laugh and be at least a little charmed... it's an inexplicable connection with the story, with the character of Greg, that I'm walking away with here. After all, there's something when an author's voice can carry you from start to finish while maintaining a sort of distance that is described right at the outset: "This book contains precisely zero Important Life Lessons, or Little-Known Facts About Love, or sappy tear-jerking Moments When We Knew We Had Left Our Childhood Behind for Good, or whatever. And, unlike most books in which a girl gets cancer, there are definitely no sugary paradoxical single-sentence paragraphs that you're supposed to think are deep because they're in italics." (All of that? Truth. Yet, still a really good, really refreshing, really honest read.)

Greg Gaines has spent his high school career not fitting into any group. Along with his buddy Earl they film movies based on favorites they've watched with his dad. All of this changes at the start of his senior year when his mom asks him to befriend a girl dying from leukemia. I wasn't sure about reading this book as I lost my own sister from leukemia, but this was well worth the read! Recommended by two friends I decided to buy it with a gift card I received for Christmas. I devoured it in a few hours.

The book is written in first person with Greg as the narrator. He often writes as if he's writing a movie script which makes sense because of his love of filmmaking. I like how all the characters develop. You don't get every aspect of them all at once. They slowly unfold. Each character is very well fleshed out.

This book isn't your typical syrupy soap opera-type story about death with a fairytale ending. This story is much more true to life. I liked the realness of it.

Definitely recommend for high schoolers and older. There is a lot of cussing, but if you've worked with high school students it fits perfectly. There is also a scene where Greg and Earl eat food tainted with marijuana (complete accident...seriously) and talk about other drugs.

All The More Honest For Its Unreliable Narrator

"Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" is probably sick of being compared to "A Fault in Our Stars", and I don't blame it one bit. While both fall into the admittedly insensitively named category of " teenage sick lit", the two books couldn't be more different.

Andrews' protagonist Greg, who only wants to be unnoticed and detached from the rest of the world, so long as he can make secret films with his partner (but not really friend) Earl. Unfortunately, Greg's mother wants him to hang out with Rachel, the titular dying girl, to help raise her spirits.

Mr. Andrews word hard to keep the language scattered enough to be believed that a teenage boy is the author. He equally strains to avoid any of the Hallmark card sentiment this genre can so easily fall into. While our narrator tells us that his experience with the dying girl did not alter his life in some great way, the facts speaks otherwise. His own inability to recognize the impact makes it all the more powerful.
Do not come into this expecting a Hazel and Gus romance. It is not here. While TFIOS is a move about how a short life can also have great meaning, this novel is about how loss and life's big transitions can knock us about, leaving us a bit bruised and sometimes wiser, sometimes not. It is a realization that happy endings are for the movies, and I've is a continuing story, with hopes, dreams, and promises that don't always make it. No more do you see this than with the harsh reality of Earl, and, of course, the dying girl.
Funny, profane, and yes, poignant and gripping, this novel is worth a read. Be warned, however: it is frustrating in its honesty, because seen through a different filter, these characters could have tasted the stars. Instead, we get to taste the truth, which isn't always as sweet.

About the Author
Nick Middleton is a Fellow and Lecturer in Physical Geography at St Anne's College, Oxford University. His background is in the physical side of geography but his interests span the entire subject. His academic role is supplemented by his work as an environmental consultant and freelance author having written more than 250 articles in journals, magazines and newspapers, and 18 books.

Aside from pages in the wrong place, it's an easy book to understand

This book is easy to understand, however it was unfortunate that the publisher sold copies that had pages missing and pages placed in the wrong chapters, out of order. It must have been a problem with the printing, because more than one person in the college course for which I was using this book had the same problem. We had all bought our books used, so there was no way to get a refund from the publisher. The book, otherwise, was fine, easy to understand, and not a difficult textbook in any way whatsoever. I am not an environmental science major (I am a social work and political science major, and I read this book for my one and only environmental science course), but I had no problem understanding the material in the book. Hopefully in future editions, the publisher will correct their printing problems.

Well-written, harrowing account

This is a well-written first-hand account of one man's experience as a kidnapping victim in Iraq. Starting from the actual kidnapping, we accompany Roy through various locations until his release after 311 grueling days of captivity. Beatings, starvation, injury, illness, filthy conditions, sleep deprivation, and extreme confinement--Roy endured all of this and more.

Editorially and journalistically, this book is a standout. The prose was sparkling and error-free. The composition was superb. Iraq-related books are nearly always politically proselytizing, and this one isn't. The author gave a factual account of the events. The book doesn't have any agenda apparent to me other than to tell what happened.

We do get a glimpse of Roy's religious background, but the book doesn't have a religious agenda. Roy does express his gratitude for his rescuers (and rightfully so), but he doesn't shill for the military. As a reader, I wanted to know what happened and I wanted to read that without having to endure political or religious preaching. This book did not betray my trust on that score.

Roy provides enough detail at each step so we can understand how and perhaps why this or that event happened. For example, how does someone inside a reasonably secure building protected by armed guards get kidnapped from that building? How can someone be hidden away for nearly a year, in a place crawling with military troops who are looking for the kidnapped?

This book raises many interesting questions, just in the telling of the story. As noted, it also answers many questions. One question people have asked Roy repeatedly is how he managed to hang on for so long. We see the answer as events unfold.

Sprinkled into this account are parallel accounts from family members for certain days. The material for these accounts comes from such sources as his daughter's diary.

Many interesting facts emerge in the narrative. For example, despite being in a dark cellar Roy was able to track the calendar by counting the daily flyover of Blackhawk helicopters and to determine the approximate time of day by noting which of the five daily prayer sessions his captors were engaged in.

The very existence of the prayer sessions brings up another point. Many times throughout the book, Roy recounted some "our religion is better than your religion" remark or another from his captors, and the remark was completely at odds with their behavior (kidnapping and torture). At one point, his captors gave him a sheet of paper in which they had written "the house rules." Item number one said "We are your friends." The other items basically gave reasons they would kill him.

You can understand much about the Iraq situation just by reading this book. Even if you're not especially interested in learning about Iraq, this book is worthwhile because it's a good read. It's a page turner, partly because the story is good and partly because the story is told so well.

This book runs about 200 pages covering 34 chapters. The chapter count is a little high for this many pages, and my first concern upon seeing this was the chapters were made short in an effort to cover weak writing. That wasn't at all the case, though, as the writing was top-notch. The chapters were short, because each one addressed something specific and Roy didn't write any filler to make the chapters longer.

Reviewer's personal viewpoint

The contradictions Roy observed are (IMO) part of the overall Muslim extremist delusion. All of the destruction by these people since the fall of Saddam Hussein has been pointless and counterproductive. Had these extremists been capable of rational analysis, they would have taken an entirely different course and benefited from increased prosperity and all that entails. Instead, they've been killing off themselves and everyone around them while ensuring poverty for all.

This point isn't one Roy made. The reason I make it is Roy's account reveals just how insane these people are, and how little regard they have for their own country or fellow citizens. The account reveals that simply by recounting the actions of these people. Roy did make a point of letting us know the kidnappings are rampant and most of the people kidnapped are Iraqi citizens. So, this isn't a matter of "freedom fighters" striking back at invaders. It's a case of criminals engaging in crime. It's really that simple.

The account here does help us understand the minds (such as they are) of the people who are doing the kidnappings. I don't know if Roy will agree with me or not, but to me this just shows that whether we bring all of our troops home today or stay in Iraq another 20 years, the outcome will be the same. The only difference is the body count and the spending that we can't afford.

The book doesn't advocate staying in Iraq or pulling out. The kidnappers own irrationality makes that particular case.

This story is an amazing tale of survival

This story is an amazing tale of survival, both mental and physical. The circumstances under which Roy was held are absolutely horrifying. What a strong and inspiring individual he is!

Often these first person accounts by non-writers end up being stilted. However, this one reads like a novel - I couldn't put it down, something that rarely occurs with non-fiction.

It's a must-read!

This book about Roy Hallum's hostage situation is a real eye opener! The fact that he was "imprisoned" for 311 days by an Iraq terrorist cell is sometimes hard to believe - that humans could treat another human being the way he was, by being beaten and tortured. Even worse, he was forced to stay underground in a chamber under the basement in one of the terrorist's homes all that time, in the heat, dark and filth. There were a lot of times that they didn't even feed him and only allowed him to take bathroom breaks usually once a day while blindfolded and hands tied behind his back. He was with other prisoners off and on too, but they were not allowed to talk or interact. Roy's writing was very good and you felt as though you were with him. The whole purpose to taking hostages is to get large sums of money for ransom from the individual's company or country. I can see why the U. S. refuses to pay these, as it just encourages the terrorists to do more. Some of the other hostages were beheaded and tortured beyond belief and didn't even end up with the terrorists getting the ransoms they thought they would. I found it very interesting that to pass his time, besides his strong faith, Roy would take imaginary road trips through the U. S. and mentally "see" how the travels went. I thought that was a really great idea and really did help him through many bleak and long days. The government didn't keep his family as informed as I think they should have and I was surprised that there was not much help given to his family during their own ordeal. Roy Hallums has written a very interesting book of the true events he endured during his captivity. It is an easy read and not too long. I learned a lot about the terrorists and their horrible tactics to prisoners. They should not get a dime for having hostages !
