Black Butterfly is my favorite book by Drake

Black Butterfly is my favorite book by Drake. Chaos, the one I like least. I found Science to be a bit repetitive and having a few words, sometimes one short sentence, on the right side of a two page spread made this a very short book. I liked it, he always has a lot to say, the number of words don't actually matter, but it just left me feeling so-so.

Love these poems. Some are just like one liners, but they are still so magical sounding. Definitely would buy from this author again. I suggest following him on Instagram too.

Kind of disappointing.

Personally, I was really disappointed in this book. After reading the reviews and looking at snippets of his work online I was more than ecstatic to finally receive this book in the mail. However... It sucked. I'm sorry. The 'poems' themselves weren't entirely awful, but the format killed me. It felt like someone stuck me in a middle school girl's tumblr account with giant artsy font and black and white lawn chair photography as a background on EVERY SINGLE PAGE. Also, a lot of his poems felt very unoriginal. :l His other books far surpass this one. That being said, this would be a good poetry introduction for Tweens and early teenagers and that's why I am giving it four stars.

The kinetic energy of the aptly named Locomotion (the nickname of Lonnie Collins Motion) permeates the 60 poems that tell his sad yet hopeful story. Lonnie's first poem sets up a conflict familiar to anyone who has attempted creativity: despite the cheering of his teacher, Ms. Marcus ("Write it down before it leaves your brain," she says), as he begins to write, Lonnie hears the critical voice of his foster mother ("It's Miss Edna's over and over/ Be quiet!"). As Lonnie explores poetry's various forms throughout this brief yet poignant and occasionally humorous volume, he also reveals Miss Edna's kindness toward him in the little things she says and does ("The last time Miss Edna came home and found me/ crying She said Think/ about all the stuff you love, Lonnie"). Gradually Lonnie reveals that at age seven, his parents died in a fire, leaving him and his younger sister, Lili, orphaned. Lili was adopted, yet Lonnie figures out a way to visit her regularly. The gradual unfolding of his life's events intermingle with his discoveries about poetry as a form, from haiku to sonnets ("Ms. Marcus says "sonnet" comes from "sonnetto"/ and that sonnetto means little song or sound/ It reminds me of that guy's name Gepetto/ the one who made Pinocchio from wood he found") to the epistle poems he writes to his father and to God. Woodson, through Lonnie, creates (much as Sharon Creech did with the boy narrator in Love That Dog) a contagious appreciation for poetry while using the genre as a cathartic means for expressing the young poet's own grief. Ages 10-up.

Grade 4-6-Lonnie Collins Motion, the Locomotion of the title, is a New York City fifth grader with a gifted teacher who assigns her class to write different forms of poetry. The house fire that killed Lonnie's parents and the four years of trauma and slow healing that follow are gradually revealed through his writings. In a masterful use of voice, Woodson allows Lonnie's poems to tell a complex story of loss and grief and to create a gritty, urban environment. Despite the spare text, Lonnie's foster mother and the other minor characters are three-dimensional, making the boy's world a convincingly real one. His reflections touch on poverty and on being African American when whites seem to have the material advantages, and return repeatedly to the pain of living apart from his younger sister. Readers, though, will recognize Lonnie as a survivor. As she did in Miracle Boys (Putnam, 2000), the author places the characters in nearly unbearable circumstances, then lets incredible human resiliency shine through. Gr. 3-6. Lonnie is grieving and angry about the loss of his parents in a fire four years ago and about his subsequent separation from his beloved little sister, who is in foster care. He expresses his feelings in his fifth-grade poetry-writing class, encouraged by his wonderful teacher Ms. Marcus. In a series of free-verse poems and more formal verse, such as haiku and sonnets, he writes about his life and about the writing that "makes me remember." The framework of the story is fairy-tale idyllic--perfect family before the fire; happy-ever-after foster family by the end of the book--but the poetry is simple and immediate, true to the voice of the lost kid who finds himself with caring people and with words. The line breaks make for very easy reading, and Lonnie talks about those line breaks and about poetry forms, making this ideal for use in classrooms where students are reading and writing poetry. From rap to haiku, Woodson shows and tells that poetry is about who we are. Hazel Rochman

LOCOMOTION by Jacqueline Woodson tops the list of originality with thought provoking words from a little boy named Lonnie. Although LOCOMOTION is categorized as poetry, it is not written as one of the traditional styles of poems that rhyme. LOCOMOTION is a collection of poems that reads as a story with uniqueness and wonderful grandeur. Every word echoes a young child's hurt and rediscovery of self.

Lonnie, who lost his parents in a fire, writes in first person in the book. He tells a story through poetic form of suddenly being left alone and separated from his little sister, Lili. Lonnie is encouraged by his teacher to write down all this thoughts as soon as they hit his brain. He writes about living in a foster home, visits with his sister and going to school each day. Lonnie continues his thoughts about the new kid in school, his friends and learning about sickle cell anemia for the first time. He writes of trying to believe in God, as his little sister has done, believing one day they will be together as a family. The most heart wrenching part was his words of about not having his parents with them anymore and learning that he and his sister would be living in separate homes.

I have never read such an enjoyable children's book as LOCOMOTION. Jacqueline Woodson has opened new doors of poetic style and humble offerings. Although this book is written for ages six to twelve, a book of this magnitude can be enjoyed by all ages. Several selections brought tears to my eyes and caused my heart and soul to interact with each word. The heartfelt meaning of why Lonnie was expressing himself through words was moving. Jacqueline Woodson has indeed written another award winning children's book.

I love this book because he expereses his feelings in poems.I would recamend this book to people who like poems or are afraid to express their feelings. In stead of saying it like it's bad, but express in things that you like doing. Read this book and you'll fall in love. I wish there was a locomotion 2.

Locomotion, An Okay Book

This book, Locomotion, was an okay book. I think that in some ways it was good and in some ways bad. The book should have been called a collection of poems rather than a book. The poems did not fit like a story well because they never reached a climax. I think that this book would suit someone who wanted to learn that poetry does not need to rhyme and that they can be very freeform. Woodson has a gift for writing poetry, but not for creating a plot. I would not recommend this book to someone looking for a great book, but for a quick read. I thought that the book did not satisfy me but still deserves a decent rating. It was interesting to discuss at times but sometimes the poems lacked deeper meaning. All in all, the book was good but not a book that I would highly recommend.

Bright, clever and new point of view

The idea that the book conveys is brilliant and original. This new idea opens a new way into the research of logic. It gives the researcher a new tool to discover and improve the knowledge of relationship between mind and logic. However, this book requires a mathematicall basic of matrix and vector algebra, so judge yourself before buying it.

faulty ebook

I just compared the first few lines of this ebook to a print copy published by Suhrkamp that I ordered from amazon.de about 14 years ago. Several words were omitted from the ebook, enough to lose some of the meaning. That was enough to convince me that this is just one more free ebook that isn't worth having. Pity.

I love this book!

First of all, I am german and german is my first language. I read this book in Germany and loved it! Many years later, I live in the USA and wanted to read it again. At first I bought the english version and was borderline disgusted. I felt the english translation lost all of the charm, the entire atmosphere the german edition has.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in Buddhism, finding enlightenment, finding their true path, Deepak Chopra and so on.

I had never read this book by Herman Hesse before. My first language is German, so I thought I read the text in its original. I enjoyed very much the content, but was a bit disappointed by the many spelling mistakes and punctuation mishaps. My Kindle version of the book was very cheap ($0.99), which could be the reason for the mistakes. Someone without advanced knowledge of the German language might get confused by those typos. I just hope that it was the original text, not something translated into German from another language. All in all, I do recommend the book. The text exemplifies what is possible when an author skillfully uses literary devices within his creation. Indian philosophy is not forced on the reader, but the choice is left to the audience what to make of it. I would have given five stars if it weren't for the mistakes.
