heart-wrenching contemporary romance

Josh Morris traveles to the world's most remote locales in search of stories for magazines. On the other hand, his former wife Briana prefers the confines of her small Missouri farm as the extent of her globetrotting. Their relationship, albeit rather short, produced one precocious little girl, Nealie.

Now in Moscow after a dangerous stint among the Pitcairn penguins, Josh finds messages from his agent to urgently call his ex-wife. When he reaches her by phone, not that easy to connect from Moscow to Missouri, he learns that his beloved Nealie is extremely ill with the deadly Yates anemia disease. Only the blood contained in the umbilical cord of a sibling can save the little girl's life. As Josh immediately returns home, Briana wonders whom will save her life when she becomes intimate with the only man she loves before he deserts her for his next deadly assignment?

THE BABY GIFT is a heart-wrenching contemporary romance that uses modern medical science to perform miracles on Nealie and on the relationship between the lead characters. The entire cast is a delight though if they talked with one other instead of hiding their feelings inside secrets, they would have had less trouble (and we readers no romance). Still Bethany Campbell provides a gift of a tearjerker that will enthrall the audience with its angst-laden story line.

Good Story - But Can Be Frustrating at Times.

This was a very good story and realistic as this type of treatment is being used regularly in the US.

Briana is a strong yet weak woman. Her weakness is her family, obeying her father's every demand/command and letting it ruin her marriage. She lives on a small farm and has the heavy burden of her family depending on her alone to run the farm and keep the books, stretching her very thin. Her daughter, Nealie, has been diagnosed with a rare form of life threatening anemia but she is keeping it a secret. Her father is one of the most controlling men I have ever read about and she has allowed him control over her life. She is so blind when it comes to her family's control issues and demand on her life. She cant,or refuses to see it and believes she can never leave the farm are her whole family's living will be in jeopardy.

Josh is a famous photographer that travels the world, wherever he is sent. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage to the love of his life, Briana, he asks her to make a choice...her and their baby travel the world with him or she stays on her family's farm and do everyone's bidding. Stupidly she chose her family and farm and she and Josh divorce.

This could have been a 5-star read for me but I had a couple of issues. Briana was a very smart, intelligent woman but could not see what her family was doing to her and her own family. Even after Nealie's health issue was diagnosed and Josh came home, she cow-towed to her family's whims, staying all night with her father most every night because he didn't "feel well" while her own daughter was at home with Josh slowly dying. Though she claimed to love Nealie with her whole heart, she was not the kind of mother or wife she should have been, especially when her daughter was so ill. Poppa and the farm came first...not good and what a poor example for her child.

To me, the story seemed to drag in places and was very frustrating at times. I pushed through because I was anxious to find out the ending but I could have skipped many pages and had the same result.

Strong, character driven romance -- Very highly recommended

For two months Briana Morris has known that her precious daughter has a deadly blood disease. Her best chance for recovery requires a transplant from a healthy sibling, but Briana divorced her daughter's father Josh seven years ago. Briana's gift for business and growing things ties to her the family farm while Josh's gift for photography carries him to the most dangerous and distant parts of the globe. Despite their divorce, however, neither has gotten over the passion they once shared.
When Briana's desperate call reaches him Russia, Josh hurries back to the states. He is shocked when Briana explains their daughter's illness, and even more so when she explains her proposed solution. In order to save their daughter's life, Briana wants another child. But not the old fashioned way. She proposes they resort to artificial insemination to assure the baby's health. While moral and ethical dilemma divide Briana and Josh, their shared love their child unites them in finding solutions, however unorthodox.
The contrast between a cat afraid of mice and the resilient spirit of a terminally ill child lends THE BABY GIFT a delightful balance. Rather than resigning herself to fear and loss, mother Briana boldly pursues answers that will give her child life, regardless of the risk to her own heart. Burdened by overwhelming responsibilities to her family, she never yields her determination to do what is best for her child. Conversely, Josh confronts the ethical and moral dilemmas of saving his child with fortitude. Their compromises will touch the heart, whatever one's personal beliefs might be. While the conclusion brings healing and independence, this reader felt a bit rushed by the profound changes. Nevertheless, THE BABY GIFT is a moving tale readers will not soon forget, coming very highly recommended.

It is a great book describing the fundamental failure modes in honeycomb structures

It is a great book describing the fundamental failure modes in honeycomb structures. The chapter showing analysis of honeycomb panels is very useful. The book also has a gret chapter on honeycomb repairs, however no exact calculation is shown for the repairs. Still, it is a very good read and I recommend it to every engineer working with honeycomb structures.

Most of the information is already available in various suppliers' catalogs and publications. Pictures of application are old and show little detail if any. Advances in facing materials and adhesives were not discussed in length so are the tooling and manufacturing equipment used in this industry. Would appreciate more information on failures and cause of failure of bonded structures.
On the plus side there are lots of graphs, tables, illustrations, and examples of calculations which are useful. Reference given are good place to get further information.
In general this is an expensive book in hard cover that is meant to be kept on every practitioner's reference bookshelf.

My two cents

I questioned reviewing this for two reasons ... first, it's a textbook, and most buyers probably don't have a choice about which Statistics textbook to buy. Secondly, I'm new to statistics, and I'm learning it as a person would learn a foreign language ... from the ground up. That being said, I decided to go forward with it in case it matters in some way with revisions, or if someone out there is looking for a book to use to teach themselves statistics.

The book is well laid out, and seems to take things in a logical sequence. I have liked the healthcare-related examples to drive home what they are trying to explain. My issue with this book it that it contains what I suspect are typing errors.

As an example... on page 71, the equation is given to calculate z-scores as z=(x-mu) / sigma x (3-18). (sorry ... don't know how to type the special symbols, but you get the idea). I worked for quite some time to try to figure out where the (3-18) came from that I was supposed to multiply by, only to conclude that this was a typing error since the formulas are all referenced with chapter number and a sequence of numbers. This one is #3-16, so I think maybe it was type-set with a 3-18 looking like part of the actual formula.

Another example is in the chapter review for chapter 2. Question 8 is supposed to (according to the answer key) read: "Standard deviation is best described by which of the following statements? c) It is the variance squared". I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why I got this one wrong - but all sources I found reiterate that SD is the square root of the variance, not the variance squared.

One final example - on page 67, there is a sample problem concerning probability that states: "the probability of flipping a tail on a coin is .5" ... but when it demonstrates the calculation, it changes the .5 to .05. When you do the math, however, they have the correct answer - so again, just a typing error with it written as: .17 x .05 = .085

My point in all this is that it has given me reason to be somewhat suspicious as I move through the book. One could argue that the heightened awareness is helping me learn the material and stay engaged ... I would agree ... but there are enough issues that would make me think twice before recommending this book to others.

UPDATE - In continuing with my study using this textbook, I've discovered an even more significant issue... the z-table (pp. 519-520). In chapter 3 (p. 71) there was a problem using the existing z-table that seems to work out given the numbers in the problem and table, but when I got to chapter 4 (page 87), the numbers that it cites from the z-table aren't on there - anywhere. The z-score is 1.67, and the corresponding value from the table was 24.86. The text walks you through how to look up the value, but then says, "The number that is located at the intersection of the row and column is the area under the curve at and before the z-value; in this case the value is 0.9525." I ended up going online and downloading a z-table, and the numbers do not correlate. Could this be some table that represents something I haven't learned about? Absolutely...but it's the only z-table in the appendix. As a newbie to statistics, they're sending me on LOTS of research trips to find out how to solve these discrepancies. So either the book is error-filled or extremely confusing for a newcomer. I changed my mind ... I'd go 2 stars.

Best Statistics Book!

Even though I read a lot of books, I do not often write book reviews - this is only my second review. If you are looking for an excellent book about statistical methods in the health sciences, this is the best book on the subject! It is very professional, and yet as clear as statistics can possibly be. Highly recommended for teaching both undergraduate and graduate students!

For the first time in over eighty years, the full autobiography of George M�ller is back in print in a beautiful hardback edition. This covers M�ller's entire life and ministry, especially the Bristol Orphanage, in which God met the needs of 120,000 children over a period of 63 years. The subtitle "A Million and a Half in Answer to Prayer" is better appreciated when we understand that a million and a half pounds then would be equal in today's U.S. dollars to 75 million dollars. This amount came in over a period of 63 years through prayer to provide for the orphans. The volume includes over forty original photos of M�ller, his staff and associates, the orphan homes, and the orphans themselves. M�ller's full account of God's faithfulness will inspire any reader with the reality that there is indeed a living God who is glorified by answering believing prayer.

Autobiography of George Muller or a Million and a Half in Answer to Prayer is one of the greatest and most important testimonies to the faithfulness of God in the history of the Church. Mueller's Autobiograph-A Rare Find for the Price

After reading and revering "Answers to Prayer" and other books that featured excerpts from George Mueller's "Autobiography," I was most blessed to have found and purchased a used copy of the full autobiography from Amazon.com. While the lower part of each page is faded and a bit challenging to read (the only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars), the joy and assurance I receive from reading Mueller's open, frank, and pure account of his transformation from open rebellion against Christ to total devotion to Him and subsequent founding of the orphanages, Scripture and missionary socieites with which Mueller became forever remembered. In an age of mass media high-tech and eBooks, I still feel most connected feeling in my own hands this 1914 3rd edition. To turn its pages and read words that could well be spoken today is even more telling of its timeliness: "A flood of unbelief is spreading over this land - yea, over the world, and is carrying away many of our youth from God and His Word." (G. F. Bergin, comp., from "Introduction," 1905 edition.) And in our own 3rd millennium, while most Western evangelical churches seem to seek to be "more relevant" to music and style trends, the testimony of Mueller and other past saints - The Wesleys, Dwight L. Moody, Anderw Murray, W.A. Tozer, et. al. - continue to draw Christ-followers back to the relevance and reality of Himself.

About the Author
Edward Beltrami is Professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the State University of New York at Stoney Brook. A GREAT book (not a term I use lightly)

For entry level (and with an elegance that goes far beyond that), there is nothing like this. I have been rummaging through sources looking in essence for this book -- one which straightforwardly, using common sense and logic wherever possible, with a masterful use of language, great clarity and also a sense of deeper aspects of the topic, walks me sensibly up through the concepts. I would rate this above anything I've seen from more popular authors (such as Nassim Taleb). This author is a great teacher, again a term I very rarely use, and I reserve for only the highest praise. The "look inside" feature confirms it. This book is bringing about a sea change in the level of my understanding, and is opening the doors for me to move readily to more technical books. I read maybe three books a week, and rarely am I brought to such rapt enjoyment, such an immediate sense of reward and gain for my time. I wonder why so many authors digress into noisy tangents and don't follow the thread and build block upon block so well as this one does!

RANDOM AND CONFUSING THOUGHTS

A well meaning, but totally sloppy book -- botn in writing style and clarity of thought. Interesting for the range of topics it suggests relate to its subject, although its coverage of them is aweful. It is somewhat useful for the references it offers, in case the frustrated reader is still interested enough in the topics to try and make up for the book's own failures by reading up on them elsewhere. As for the rest, it is hard to follow and confusing on all but the most elementary points.

interesting, but pedagogically feeble

This book is contains a fairly substantial (from the layman's point of view) discussion of randomness. It discusses the fundamentals of probability, information/entropy, etc. It ends with an appendix of "technical notes", an appendix on binary notation and 6 pages of references. But it has no exercises, and presents its material as if the layman could assimilate it by simple passive reading. Not so. You need a paper and pencil. You need to manufacture exercises to master or even understand the material. I am comfortable with algebra and basic calculus, but got lost and gave up after a couple of chapters (I did not break out pencil and paper).

If you are not mathematically sophisticated enough to just "get it" by reading, I suggest you buy a real textbook, where the author is actually makes a commitment to teaching, rather than mere exposition.
