Excellent book!

This book is about the physical and psychological aspects of humans that cause us to 'do' religion. Although written in the 1970's only a very small part of it has been superseded by new understanding of biology and psychology, so it is very relavent for any person trying to understand what is going on with religion, faith and what people are getting out of this very costly aspect of human behavior.
It starts with a careful grounding in how very simple societies think of 'religion' and works its way through more complex ones. Although a dense read, nearly a text book, it is important to read and think about. The world has only recently become more complex, in terms of human psychology, and there are still tribal societies very much alive today - and the logic pattern is still very much a part of being human, even if the reader has never lived outside a major city.
Then the author discusses 'crisis cults' - how cultures try to make sense of things when their religious world view is no longer working properly and satisfying their genuine need for psychological balance. Humans need balance, emotional and psychological balance, to be able to function properly. As social creatures we need others to function with, and be comfortable with. Part of that balance, and finding sound communities to live in, understanding ourselves so we understand others too is necessary to being a complete human being.
Reading this will not cause a person to 'lose faith in god'. It will, however, dramatically change how a person defines god and certainly how they interact with clergy and dogma. And I find it helps explain a great deal about the contradictory behavior of religious people in general.
