It Takes 2 To Tango

Book 2 in the continuing story of John & Sylvia is just as riveting as Book 1 Living Apart Together. Again great length as well as great plot.

It is hard to keep a marriage together especially when one partner is the marriage is submissive & one over bearing. And this author hits the nail on the head you do grow apart if you have nothing any longer in common once your children are grown.

I'm a strong woman & I would NOT let my child dictate my marriage to me nor would I have interfered with my parents marriage. In this sequel the children are way to involved in their parents lives.

Again I started reading this book where I left off in the middle around Midnight it's 3:40AM & I just finished it now I have to wait for book 3 entitled John. I not sure I can wait that long.

If you like reading books that are somewhat based on reality you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

So now I have to buy Dear John?

700 pages later, still nothing was ironed out. While I enjoyed the book, there was so much repetition: John is a vanilla tight-ass and Sylvie is a wimpy slob. I kept reading, enjoying, reading, enjoying, wondering how Cornwall would be resolved, but it wasn't even brought up again. I loved Sylie's evolution; how she was progressing into the woman she always wanted to be, but I really didn't like the continued whining of either main character. I looked forward to how the marriage would work out, but I never found out. The book, now series, just ends. Now buy the third installment. I feel that if I purchase the next book, nothing will still be resolved and have to read the continued carping. I wouldn't mind buying the next book if the prior books had showed proper endings, with new escapades to enjoy. Now, I just feel like I was gypped.

Poorly Structured and Repetitive

I found the book to be repetitive, poorly structured and lacking useful content.

One example of repetition that I find in the book is Chapter 11 Representational Languages. While the chapter does discusses the available languages, it also discusses, one again, what should be included in each view. The author previously provided this information when discussing each view earlier in the book.

This is just one example of repetition. You can find plenty more examples throughout the book. The above example also highlights my concerns with structure.

The diagrams provided in the book appear to be thrown together in a haphazard manner with little or no concern for style or clarity. His BPMN diagrams, a powerful modeling language he trivialized, border on unreadable. They would make a great example of how not to put a model together.

I still have many questions, questions I feel this book should have answered since it is an introductory book. I could not in his conscience recommend this book to anyone.

Just two days ago I returned this book to Amazon after having a chance to preview it for 48 hours. As a practicing Sr. Business Architect I found very little information that was valuable and quite a bit that might be construed as misleading when compared to what industry experts and research organizations like Forrester present. I had hoped to find a publication that I could share with others to help them understand the discipline better...but I'll keep looking.

There was no mention of Business Capability Models (one of the main tools of the trade!), there were only very basic graphics that weren't helpful, and way too much text and lack of meaningful diagrams and examples of real business architecture in practice.

Congratulation Hugh. I found "Home Grown" to be a real page turner, could hardly put it down. Not just a great script but wonderful character development that held my interest and had me really feel for the characters. Looking forward to your next novel.

Time I will never get back...

Do yourself a favor and not purchase or download this book. Not even if its free. It's that bad.

I will admit that I am a grown up that has started reading young adult fiction because right now all novels for women over 30 are going through a 50 Shades of Porn for the Modern Housewife phase. Great for some, just not my cup of tea.

So, I gave this book a try and I'm sorry to report that it is really bad. First off, it's quite clear that the author (1) Does not have any children of her own and (2) Has not gotten over high-school.

Why? Well - for one, real parents don't let their teenage daughters have the 18 year old neighbor boy have weekly sleep overs - not in the same house, let alone the same bed. Real parents don't let their 17 year old daughter go out on dates during the week with 21 year old losers that still hang around high-school football games. They don't run out in their bathrobe to check out the piece of ass and squeal about his hotness after. Real parents worry about how they've shaped their children so far, what sort of future they will have, if they're doing their homework, making sure they're not doing drugs and praying to god they aren't ready to have sex no matter how often they kiss their pillow.

Second,high-school isn't full of sexual aware teenagers, where the room actually goes quiet whenever the heroine enters a room and cat calls follow her every move. High school is full of freaked out kids, coping with adult feelings and adolescent maturity.

I'm sorry if the author reads this and is hurt. But the true feelings of falling for your friend when you don't understand yourself or the feelings you're having could have been explored on such a more complex level. Young Adult can be mature, even when the characters are not.

She was a tease who should have known better...MAJOR SPOILERS!

Like the earlier poster, I too was hooked on the sample chapters so I went ahead & purchased the book with excitement. Ugh, major disappointment!

***SPOILERS*** I hate to say this about anyone but I'm sorry, I just found the heroine to be a dumb, irresponsible ho! I mean, she's sixteen & flirting (sexual innuendos!) with a 20-21 year old guy who does not attend her school but hangs out there! She gets into this adult's car to go for milkshakes without telling anyone, after only meeting him the day before for a few hours, & after her best guy friend (hero) whom she's grown up with & always looked out for her says the douche is bad news & stay away! Where is her sense of safety & responsibility? She knows she's underage yet dresses in a mini-skirt & a top with her freakin' red bra showing...and her parents let her out of the house like that to go out on a date with this adult?! Granted this was a few weeks later once she turned 17, but good grief, I found her parents to be caring folks so for them to allow this just because the guy is gorgeous? Freakin' unbelievable!

Like the heroine, I've had my best guy friend carry me around & I've jumped on them...piggyback! Who the heck runs to their best friend & jumps on them in the front, wrapping their arms & legs around said guy like glue, basically grinding against each other & giving each other hickies? Then, though she doesn't want psycho adult, instead of blowing him off, she still talks to him flirty & with sexual undertones, WTF?! I pity the hero.

Horrible, terrible heroine. Her behaviour was so appalling that I skip through several pages, though I persevered till the end hoping there was a light at the end of the tunnel & that our wonderful heroine would eventually mature.

I hope young teens who read this realize and understand that this is fiction and do not think they have to act like her to get a good guy. What a waste of my time & money.

Bad.

I cannot believe 20 + people gave this book five stars. I feel duped. I normally do not write reviews but I have to because this was just awful. It was too cheesy. I don't know how many times the hero said "I love you Riley Bear." Unreal! I like a good love story but this was just too much. Not sure how many parents would allow their teenage daughters to have boys sleep over, and how many parents would allow a group of 16-17 year olds to just drive to Vegas on their own.

I feel like the author just tried too hard, too much unrealistic drama.

A Real Gem

This novel is an excellent first book. It is very well researched and bravely takes on a past era with flourish and conviction. The plot is convincing, although a little laboured and repetitive at times, but this is outweighed by a wealth of great characters who bring it to life. I would have given it five stars if it had been a truly indie effort, but since it has been published through Endeavour Press, it should have benefitted from far better proofreading and copy editing. While it kicks off with a number of good Elizabethan words and phrases, a rather annoying number of 21C words and expressions have been allowed in - adrenaline and morphed are two examples that screamed at me. There was also a raised that should have been razed and a misused myriad that no decent proofreader/copy editor should have allowed. Again, just two examples, but there are rather too many others. From my own indie endeavours I know just how hard it is to eliminate mistakes, but when a book has been through a publisher's mill, these sorts of errors are inexcusable.
Despite all that, I should highly recommend A Murderous Affair to anyone who likes a good page-turning yarn with some great self-deprecating humour on the part of the main character - the book is written in the first person. I hope that Jonathan Digby follows up with a sequel - John Lovat is a likeable character about whom I'd enjoy reading much more.

A marvellous novel from an exciting author

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Set in Elizabethan London, it tells the story of John Lovat, a young man who is rudely awakened from his drunken slumber one morning to assist with investigating the murder of a foreigner in London.

As the story progresses, the story surrounding the dead man becomes murkier. Lovat's own brother is implicated and Lovat himself must fight to stay alive as he is drawn ever deeper into the criminal world of Elizabethan England. He must use all his wits and the few true friends he has to stay one step ahead of those who intend him harm. Can he stay safe, or will he too become just another casualty in this complicated affair?

I thought the story was gripping and exciting, with plenty of twists and turns and some wonderful, memorable characters. The author has clearly meticulously researched the history of Elizabethan times and this is apparent in the colourful, real and vivid descriptions he gives. They drew me, as the reader, into the world of Elizabethan London and it became alive to me.

Jonathan Digby is an author to watch out for.

A delightful escape, indeed.

A reader’s appreciation for an unfamiliar genre of fiction is all about approach. When approaching Digby’s period work, be prepared to be totally immersed into the world he created. Vivid descriptions of locale, character appearance and dialogue unique to the time period, takes some getting used to. Even Digby’s narrative prose cannot escape the obscure references and flowery style of his character’s discourse. Patience and budgeting the requisite time to enjoy how this intricate story unfolds is a must…but you won’t regret it.

Quotes from such noted figures as Elizabeth I, Sir Francis Bacon and Christopher Marlow at the commencement of each chapter, foretell of the content of that chapter.

For example, Sir Francis Bacon’s quip that, ‘If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts: but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties,’ is thus expounded upon in the chapter that follows, as Lovat elects to hold the evidence presented to him fallible until proven.

Digby succeeds in weaving a murder mystery whose solution is arrived at not just by use of the primitive forensics of the era, but by the timeless deductive reasoning power of the human mind, and he does so to high precision. A delightful escape, indeed.
