THE best ALST test prep book full stop

THE best ALST test prep book full stop!
If you’re like me, you read reviews before buying something. I feel terrible because I always intend to leave reviews on products that are game changers for me but never get round to it. So here I am, note to self, leave reviews for Otterbox phone protector and Shout advanced gel (before the Otterbox case I had to change my phone every 3 to 4 months, yes I’m a klutz and ohh emm gee, Shout gel literally gets grass stains out of white pants!).
I wanted to wait until I got my results before I posted my review, mainly because I wanted to have the experience of the test whatever direction my results went. My first piece of advice to anyone who is going to take the ALST is, just buy this book! It is without a doubt worth the investment. I initially bought the kindle version which is very reasonably priced, I returned it and then bought the paper version, call me old fashioned but I simply prefer a physical copy.
What I love about the book is that it’s such an easy read, it makes you feel like the instructor Bridgette is talking to you in plain and simple English. I really liked the size of the book and the size of the text as it seems more informal and less daunting. The essay portion accounts for 60% and the multiple choice for 40% and you need to pass both to get a passing mark, that’s probably why the book has a heavy focus on the essays. It breaks everything down for you in a very digestible format in a very basic and blunt fashion, I found this extremely helpful.
She tackles each of the essays separately explaining what they are asking and how to answer them. I found the section on charts and how to tackle the essay question based on charts especially useful. She provides a rubric to keep in mind when answering the last essay, it really does help keep you on track. I wrote my paragraphs line by line and then joined them together at the end. She includes some very useful tips such as taking a practice ACT test online. She also warns you of some of the pitfalls to avoid.
One criticism I do have is that maybe she should’ve included a little more information on how to answer the multiple choice questions. There are also a few mistakes in the book. Going in, I felt reasonably confident with the essays but not so much with the multiple choice section.
I borrowed the Barron’s book from the library and didn’t find it useful for the essay section at all. I also purchased the additional practice test from NYSTCE, I wish I hadn’t have bothered. I had heard and read horror stories about this test but honestly I felt as prepared as you possibly can with this book. English isn’t my first language and I was never taught grammar as you can probably tell. I know there are probably people that go in blind and hit 590, but I’m not one of them.
And yes I passed the test the first time! But had I not bought this book and followed the guides and tips I wouldn’t have fancied my chances at all.

I loved this book. I found the way the essays were broken down was very clear and concise. There were a ton of examples for each essay which was great, because it allowed me to see an exemplar example. This is by far the best test prep book I ever purchased because I felt like I had a clear understanding of what to expect on the test, what to do for each essay and what not to do.
The author definitely knows her stuff which is why I think this book stands out from the typical Barrons, and those horrible cliff notes about these certifications I purchased. Everything else out there is extremely confusing and they use so many technical terms ; almost reads like a boring, dry , overwritten textbook. This book was straight to the point, even had entertaining parts and very easy to understand examples.
I used this book to practice each type of essay and received a high score on the ALST exam.

If you want to pass the ALST this is the book that helped me the most. it's concise and gives you what you need instead of all these other books filled with Jargon.
