About the Author
Jessica N. Watkins was born April 1st in Chicago, Illinois. She obtained a Bachelors of Arts with Focus in Psychology from DePaul University and Masters of Applied Professional Studies with focus in Business Administration from the like institution. Working in Hospital Administration for the majority of her career, Watkins has also been an author of fiction literature since the young age of nine. Eventually she used writing as an outlet during her freshmen year of high school as a single parent: “In the third grade I entered a short story contest with a fiction tale of an apple tree that refused to grow despite the efforts of the darling main character. My writing evolved from apple trees to my seventh and eighth grade classmates paying me to read novels I wrote about kids our age living the lives our parents wouldn’t dare let us”. At the age of twenty-eight, Watkins’ chronicles have matured into steamy, humorous, and realistic tales of women’s fiction. She hopes that the Epitome of Femistry series will successfully emulate ideal femininity while tackling stereotypes, familiar heartache, and relatable distress in a humorous and sophisticated fashion. Psycho Side Chick is more like it

Now I must admit when I first started reading this book I almost put it down because I felt that the author was bringing too many characters into the story line at once without any background or development. This is an automatic turn off for me...but something just told me to keep on and surprisingly this turned out to be a very good read.

Speaking of characters, Tammi, Dontae and Jimmy could have been left out of this all together, I felt they were irrelevant to the story and added nothing to it. Just basically taking up space throughout the book. The characters Simone,Omari and Ayesha could have carried this whole book on their own. Their storyline was crazy! The ending was mixed with sadness and disbelief, I noticed that there are other parts to this book, but if it ended right here I would have actually been content.

This story had all types of lies, foolery, cheating and deceit going on. A lot of these characters made me so mad that I didn't know who's a** I would have wanted to kick first if I had the chance.

Strangely Addicting...

Not the best writing and the characters pissed me off a lot. But very real to life and situations. I like this book because everyone in it has their own issues. There is no overall good character and I think that's what kept me reading. The ending was very unexpected and bizarre but it got me hooked...now I HAVE to read the second!

Jessica Watkins hands down is an amazing author. I can't remember how I even found her series but it was a book I COULD NOT put down. I finished this book in a week and was craving for more. I believe this series has now ended, because I done read every last one of them.

Her style reminds me of Sista Souljah, and Zane combined. She definitely needs more recognition for her work, she is amazing!

This book will have you hooked to the fictional characters, it will make you believe they really exist and you feel connected to them. I was immediately hooked once I started reading. I had to get the whole series because it really leaves you wanting more.

Here he examines idealism, the drive that leads people to be of service to others. This service takes a variety of forms, from the formal (e.g., the Peace Corps) to simple volunteer work in hospitals, schools, and the like. Coles makes the subject interesting by letting the people who serve talk about their work. These doers, including Coles himself, tell of the satisfactions and the hazards of service. Let it be known that idealism or service is not a one-way street, Coles maintains. Those who give are as much receivers and learners. This engaging and inspiring book is highly recommended. An exceptional blend of observation and reflection, literary report and personal revelation, that once again finds Coles (Psychiatry and Medical Humanities/Harvard; Anna Freud, 1992; etc.) exploring important social concepts--community service and the sources of altruism--with the tenacious moral energy that has characterized his writings for 30 years. From the first, Coles clearly cherished his encounters with people whose conduct claimed his imagination: In book after book, he presented them with dignity and respect. Here, he recalls the six-year-old integrating a southern school who sees ahead not trouble but opportunity; admires the white teacher who introduces Tillie Olsen's short story ``O Yes'' to a class of black middle- schoolers; learns from the Bowery bum who values not only the daily meal at his shelter but also the staff's acceptance of his angry moods; and understands the older tax lawyer who maintains that ``there's still a little of 1964 in me.'' Coles contends that-- while motives vary and overlap and stresses frequently wear people down--the satisfactions of service are plentiful and sustaining, conferring importance on small interactions and providing affirmation to those involved (often in place of, say, apparent social change). In his usual meandering way, he examines not only what those who serve mean to us and what their actions mean to them--most of his subjects emphatically resist the ``idealist'' designation--but also his own part in the equation (as volunteer and witness) and his enduring sources of inspiration: the examples of his own parents; of novelists whose ideas he finds edifying; and of mentors familiar from earlier works. Reawakening idealism

Some books make you feel good, some books make you feel rotten. This book reawakened my idealism and my interest in doing good in the world. Coles describes the elements of volunteering and how we choose the work in which we become engaged. He also describes how we become disillusioned - sometimes by ignoring the significance of the work that goes on among the volunteers, sometimes by hoping too much and knowing too little, sometimes by not looking at ourselves. But he also offers pictures out of his own life and experience, sharing personal reflections and insights. Coles describes concrete situations in many different kinds of volunteer activities, reporting carefully and without a lot of unnecessary analysis, what gets said, how people look, and when volunteer gestures lead or don't lead to success. His respect for the people he meets is inspiring, as is his openness for learning and reassessing his own value system. Not least important is that Colses is both a good writer and a gifted story teller.

The most insightful and thought provoking book of its field

Volunteerism has been my life. I am now in charge of community volunteers and students involved in service learning. I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the subject until I read this book. Many of my ideas where exploded and new, wonderful ideas and insights took their place.The book discusses problems in communicating with those we are tryig to help. It gives a wonderful discussion of the real meaning of mentoring, and who should really call themselves mentors. It is open and clear about the various reasons we all volunteer. It does not tell you how to run an agency or how to do your work. It simply open new doors that might make you a person who better serves the community. I feel everyone in the fields of volunteerism and community service should read this fabulous book.

Reading this book is time well spent

This book is fantastic. Coles spent a large portion of his life living amongst, interviewing, studying, and writing about volunteer community servants and the people for whom they work. The first 3/4 or so of this book recounts some of his favorite stories from that portion of his life. It does a fine job of doing so - these stories are the kind of thing you can't put down. The last 1/4 or so of the book tries to draw morals and conclusions from the stories. This part of the book is interesting too, and well written, but not quite as good as the first part of the book. For one thing, Coles tries to draw large-scale conclusions from non-randomly picked anecdotal cases. But his conclusions are still very interesting, and the book as a whole is really astonishingly good.

Great Reference Book!

As stated by others, this is an excellent reference book/ tool for practicing safety and industrial hygiene professionals. I was fortunate enough to have both authors as instructors for a continuing education course in IH. I also used this book to successfully prepare for, and pass, both the ASP and CSP exams the first time around.

SIX STARS !!!!

This is the third Andrew Cunningham book I have read and the second in the last week. This novel is my favorite of the three. In addition to being a well-crafted mystery including a gold & archaeological treasure hunt, murder, suspense & fast action with historically interesting facts, the dialog of the main character(s) is bitingly witty and humorously self-effacing. Many authors go too far with this form of humor in their books, making them seem unnecessarily cheesy. But Cunningham uses just the perfect blend and inclusion of this form of entertainment to make it an outstanding novel. The subplots and background are equally original. I truly believe most readers of all ages will rate this very creative novel extremely high.

Do you really want to dig up the past?

The protagonist sits at the bedside of his dying father to hear these strange words from his lips. Words he couldn't make heads or tails of. When he finially gets around to going through his father's things and trying to put his past together he finds there is a 85 year old secret - a crime his father was involved in commiting. Once he starts trying to uncover it he quickly finds out someone does not want him to uncover this secret.

I enjoyed this author and it was a different kind of mystery. I would read him again.

Couldn't put this book down! The characters were spot on and so real. The story was unique and believable. I don't know if this is a series but if not please consider one. I'm going to be looking for it. You have me hooked! The adventure and danger kept me on the edge of my bed! The great wit and humor would come unexpectedly and make me laugh out loud. What a great author you are. I'll be reading all your books. Thanks for all your hard work.

Great Introductory Text

This is probably the best International Relations (IR) text out there, and it is a good one too! IR is a hybrid and consequently very large field comprised of myriad sub-fields intersecting at various angles. This book makes sense of this confusion, and does so in an intellectually rigorous fashion.
The book is divided into two parts: International Security and International Political Economy. The chapters in these parts introduce the reader to such concepts as power politics, international law, trade, the environment, and the North-South Gap, to name a few.
It is a difficult task to sum up the entire field of IR, and Goldstein does not do this. I'm not sure it can be done. But what Goldstein does do is provide the introductory student with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of IR so that s/he can have a solid foundation from which to launch further inquiries.

Too Expensive

As a prof, I used this book in my intro IR course for many years. After not teaching the course for four years, I went to order it for this Fall, and found it cost 120 bucks. I just can't bring myself to do this to the students. The book is excellent, but not worth the price. I will not be assigning it.

WAY too expensive

I've TA'd for this class for 2 years now, and the publishers have just spiked the price. There's no reason that this 150-page book should cost more than $30. This is exploitation, pure and simple. Professors please do not assign this book.

Update: When I took this class, I paid $5 for a used copy of the 5th edition. Now you can get older editions for $0.01. As long as you're comfortable with a little insecurity, I'd almost recommend buying an older edition and saving yourself $100. They're virtually the same thing, just without a picture of Psy on the front.

I prefer the older edition

It pretty much has the same information in it as the previous edition. The nutrition care process is covered better in this edition. The appendices have the medical terminology sheets for the nutrition care process, whereas the 12th edition didn't. The beginning of each chapter doesn't have the definitions with the terms for that chapter like the 12th edition. I just like the layout of the 12th edition better.

I bought this book for a class. It has lots of information. Some of the explanations are not clear. Older versions have definitions at the beginning of each chapter. This version only has a list of the words. Sometimes you can find definitions in the chapter, and some only discuss the subject without defining it. I prefer the older version.

Jay Wiseman (Jay Joseph Wiseman)(born 1949) is an American BDSM writer and speaker. In 1991, Wiseman started the Greenery Press publishing house with his partner Janet Hardy, author "Lady Green" of The Sexually Dominant Woman. The publishing house grew to the point of publishing several titles a year, and they hired two other employees. As of 2006, Wiseman has written 11 books and dozens of articles in magazines from Playboy to Redbook.

Fit to be Tied

Jay Wiseman's "SM-101" has earned a well-deserved place on most BDSM reading lists. So I have *really* been looking forward to reading his new book dedicated to erotic bondage. I was not disappointed.
Jay starts off by setting the scope of the book. His goal is to provide basic-to-intermediate level ties in terms of both risk and difficulty. He does not cover self-bondage, suspension, complex Japanese "hojo-jitsu" ties, long-term ties, or tying against resistance. This still leaves a pretty wide range of techniques for tying single limbs, "I bet you can't get loose" games, double wrist and ankle, spread-eagle, hogtie, gags and ear muffs, male and female genital bondage, breast bondage, handcuffs, tape, safety issues, and lots of other fun stuff.
Perhaps most surprisingly considering Jay's reputation as a BDSM safety promoter, he evaluates the military-style hogtie using a rope that crosses the front of the throat as only medium risk. I have long advocated modifying the classic hojo-jitsu ties to avoid this, so Jay and I find ourselves on opposite chairs of this particular safety issue. As long as the bottom is closely monitored and not left alone, I agree that the risk from this technique is not too extreme, but it is still something I personally prefer to avoid. Jay includes a "politically correct" version (what I have in the past called the "backpack tie") for we fuddy-duddies.
This is a very handsome and substantial book, at 323 pages, with a *very* sexy cover photo and lots of excellent drawings of knots and prisoners, including gay, lesbian, and het couples. Folks who hang out on soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm and wonder what Jay, Janet, and Sockermom look like will finally have their curiosity satisfied. This is definitely must reading for anyone interested in learning how to tie up their partner(s.)
Highly trained professional stunt perverts may find that they are already familiar with some of the basic techniques. Still, I recommend this for every bondage enthusiast's library.
If nothing else, it is handy to have on the bookshelf to "try out some of these ties" with your partner.

Lots of ways to get "All Tied Up" for the Evening

This handbook is exactly that, a "reference book" for those who want to learn more about this aspect of BDSM play. Until now, there were "bondage" sections in books like SM 101, Screw the Roses, etc but Jay has devoted an entire book to this activity.
Jay has done bondage play for years and years and his experience and knowledge shows through here. As with other books Jay has written, this book is full of safety cautions and health risks related to doing bondage.
Among the sections in the book include a little bit of "theory" on bondage, different types of rope that can be used, different ways to do single or double-limb bondage, breast bondage (a personal fave!), spread-eagled bondage, and bondage equipment.
I like Jay's assertion that you don't need to learn a lot of knots to do good bondage. I'm glad to hear that because I don't know very many knots myself!
A well-written and very informative book. Good job Jay.

There's bad news and there's good news ...

Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook can be considered to be one of the 'classic' texts, in that if you ask people into BDSM to recommend books, this is one of the titles which tends to be named.
As someone who has been into bondage my entire adult life, but who relies on a relatively small number of techniques, I thought it might be interesting to broaden my repertoire.
Let's start with the bad news. The language, style, degree of repetition and statements of the stunningly obvious all combine to give the impression that the first third or so of the book was written with ten-year-olds in mind. Harsh? Written from the perspective of the experienced bondage practitioner? Well, allow me to illustrate ...
'Probably the most common reason that bondage is applied to a consenting partner is to restrict, in one way or another, their ability to move.' ... 'A sleepy or exhausted top will find it essentially impossible to remain properly alert.' ... 'It can be dangerous for the bottom to use a knife or other sharp object to cut themselves free if they cannot see where they are cutting.' ... 'The risk level seems to dramatically increase if the self-bound person unexpectedly falls.'
I could go on, but you get the idea.
Being an American book, Wiseman was clearly also looking over his shoulder for law-suits as he wrote, with almost every other page containing something like 'SM play should only be done by people who are adequately informed of the nature of what they are doing and who are mentally competent to decide for themselves whether or not this is something that they want to do.' All true, but if you are the type of person who needs this to be pointed out to you, you automatically fall into the 'not mentally competent' category (and are also unlikely to be reading the book) ...
These type of statements, and entire paragraphs devoted to points which could be more effectively made in a single sentence, take up about the first 85 pages of the book. Remove the padding, and there is probably about 15 pages of real material in this section. It's a great shame because frustration with the verbose and patronising style could easily lead the reader to miss some crucial material and cut to the chase.
Other bad news? Well, the book could use a few more illustrations, and some points would be more effectively made by photographs, but that would increase the price. Oh, and there's a boxed-out quote every few pages which is usually completely unrelated to the text on the page and thus adds to the sense of pointless padding.
I suspect the book was deliberately padded to give it a more credible page-count. Were it significantly slimmer, it might have been harder to believe that the book really was a comprehensive handbook covering most major bondage techniques. But - apart from suspension - that's exactly what it is. And that's the good news.
Every major type of tie is covered, usually with several variants. Each technique is well explained, usually well illustrated and has an excellent discussion of the considerations applicable to that type of tie. Unlike the earlier section of the book, the safety advice here is generally thoughtful and useful.
There is also a good discussion of the different types of materials, for example the different materials and manufacturing techniques used for different types of rope, and the pros and cons for each. Here again the safety information is excellent, for example explaining why eye-bolts are much safer than screw-eyes (it is very rare for the former to fail, but very common for the latter).
The step-by-step approach and level of explanation appeared suitable for complete beginners, while still containing plenty of material of interest to those of us who have been tying people up for many years!
Do I wish Wiseman or his editor would take a pair of paramedic shears to the first 85 pages of the book? Absolutely. Would I recommend this book to anyone into bondage, no matter what their experience level? Absolutely.
