Gettin' Busy with Tarot
By Val Sherill
Andy Matzner, a licensed clinical social worker, psychotherapist, and Tarot reader, has written an excellent book of exercises and activities that allow you to dive deeper into your Tarot deck. For folks new to Tarot, it's a great learning experience. For the more advanced, it opens the door to new levels of understanding.
And some of this stuff is super fun, too.
In the introduction, Matzner recounts his discovery of Tarot and the power of using it in combination with creative expression. He found there is a therapeutic aspect that can deliver self-awareness, personal insight, and positive growth.
The introduction has quite a bit of information that you don't want to miss such as an explanation of the categories, using the book, as well as tools and materials you'll need.
The exercises and activities are listed in three categories:
1) Conversation Starters
Here, the cards show you how to get a dialogue started with another person or just with yourself. I think it's worth noting that the author adds, "...and make fun ice-breakers for groups as well."
The "Relationship" activity lists a number of keywords for various types of relationships. You are asked to go through the deck and find the image you feel matches that particular keyword. From here, you can ask yourself which relationships could use improving and how might you go about making such improvements.
My favorite is "Follow the Leader" where you pick the card that answers the questions of which card can lead you to a certain outcome. Very insightful!
2) Writing & Journaling
These aren't your average journal prompts. Oh, no, they are much more involved. Here, you have the theme with an objective, background, and an explanation of the process. In some, options are given for doing it this way instead of that way. If you're feeling adventurous, do both.
There are over 100 pages of activities and prompts in this category, some a little more complicated than others. They are all very doable.
A really fun one is "Birthday Guests." Which cards would you invite to your birthday party. What kind of gift would that card bring you? I love this one. The option listed for this exercise is to substitute a birthday party for a dinner party.
3) Arts & Crafts
This is, by far, my favorite category. Give me glue, construction paper, colored pencils, watercolors, and you won't hear a peep out of me for hours. I haven't taken the time to actually do any of these, yet (I've only had the book for a week). The "Mason Jar Display" and "Vision Board" are brilliant.
A nice bonus for me are all the various quotes sprinkled throughout the pages.
This is a thought provoking, imagination building, intuition inducing, fun book. It would be a great thing to work through with a group at Tarot meetups or a Tarot themed party. If you have kids with an interest in Tarot, break out the painting supplies and get messy with `em through the Arts & Crafts category.

Unique and powerful approach to the cards
By Katrina Wynne
Andy Matzner has combined his years of experience in therapeutic modalities with the classic wisdom of Tarot to offer a value packed diversity of exercises for self reflection and potential healing. I deeply appreciate this unique offering and would say it is a must have book for those who approach life, and especially the Tarot, as an opportunity to live consciously, seeking fulfillment.
The exercises in the book are divided into three areas of focus, each building upon the previous, from 22 "Conversation Starters", and 41 "Writing & Journaling" prompts, to 33 "Arts & Crafts" project ideas, with one last exercise at the end, "Trust and Receive." Of course, as with Tarot, you can shuffle randomly and approach the exercises in any order.
I know I will be drawing from these amazing ideas for years. This is a fantastic resource for Tarot gatherings, such as my various Tarot Retreats, where we use Tarot games to break the ice and get to know one another.
Andy graciously allowed me to give him some constructive input which I know will shape the second edition of this creative book. Here is my added warning for readers.... some of the powerful exercises in this therapeutic book may trigger disturbing memories. Please refrain from these exercises or be sure to have some kind of emotional or mental support system in place to help you receive what may arise. A few of the exercises, especially in the first section, could use more explanation, or examples. As a work in progress, we all learn and improve. That being said, this book stands alone and complete as a fantastic collection for fun, thought and heart provoking opportunities.
Andy....thank you for your wonderful work in the world. All my best to you, Katrina Wynne, M.A. [...]

Great resource for therapeutic uses of the cards.
By Deanna Anderson
When I published my own title 365 Tarot Activities I often came across Andy Matzner's The Tarot Activity Book: A Collection of Creative and Therapeutic Ideas for the Cards. So, I emailed him and suggested a review exchange, and was fortunate enough for him to agree.
Am I upset that there is another Tarot activity book on the market? No way! I think it's wonderful that we both wrote a book suggesting other uses for Tarot cards (other than divination). This is not to impugn the importance of Tarot for divination, but to say that there are so many other ways to use Tarot. It is a wonderful tool in so many ways and I am glad other people see that as well. Matzner's title and mine are not in competition with each other, rather they are in conjunction with each other.
Some activities in Matzner's and my title parallel each other such as using Tarot to write poetry (p. 125) or short stories (p. 129). Although, Matzner's short story prompt is to write one in 6 words or less--a challenge definitely appealing to this author! Also, Matzner comes to Tarot with a therapeutic viewpoint and this reflects in all of his activities for the cards, whereas my viewpoint for my title was for learning and connecting with the cards.
Some activities are quite engaging and will require a lot of deep, personal thought or reflection--which is, ultimately, Matzner's purpose for the book: to create inner-reflection. Other activities are `short and sweet' such as "Free Association" (p. 33) which asks readers to flip a card over at random and think about (or write down) the first word or phrase that pops into your head (I really like this activity and am going to do it soon).
Divided into three sections: Conversation Starters, Writing & Journaling, Arts & Crafts, "The Tarot Activity Book" covers a wide-range of activities with "Conversation Starters" seeming to be a preliminary section that will help readers get used to working with Tarot, and the next two sections going more in-depth with the cards. In the sections on journaling and crafts each activity is broken down into objective, background, and process which guides readers exactly through how to work with Tarot in the method suggested.
The only downfall--and one that some readers may dislike--is activities suggesting a Tarot card to be glued, cut, or otherwise `ruined.' However, many Tarot readers and collectors do wonder what to do with a deck that was damaged in part or whole, or what to do with a deck that they no longer want to use but don't want to sell or trade. In those instances, using a card in a way that renders it useless in the future might not be so bad.
But, if you are looking for new ways to read the cards or to use them for inner-reflection and therapeutic purposes, then "The Tarot Activity Book" will have what you need.
