The viol has become increasingly popular in recent years as an instrument for the amateur with an interest in early music. With this rise in popularity has grown the need for a tutor that gives detailed advice on playing technique with an awareness of the specific requirements of the adult beginner. Play the Viol is the first comprehensive modern guide written to meet exactly this need. It includes technical instruction based on original sources together with Alison Crum's extensive teaching and performing experience. The book assumes no knowledge beyond an ability to read music; its aim is to help the player reach an advanced level, even without regular access to a teacher. Points are illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and carefully graded musical exercises. The book surveys the viol's repertoire with a wide-ranging list of published music, offers solutions to problems likely to be encountered, and includes practical information on choice and care of viols and bows.

`Play the Viol's great strength is that it is a genuine and generous handbook ... it is the author's genius for explaining techniques and solving physical problems in terms of the simplest practical logic, without dogmatism or the least penchant for professional mystique, that will give this book its standing and encourage willing-spirited and weak-fleshed tiros like myself to persevere.' Stephen Banfield, Musical Times

An Excellent Technical Introduction to the Viol
By A Customer
As probably all the people interested in this book know, finding instruction the Viol is difficult. If you do find instruction, you will also most likely find that it is quite expensive. Luckily, Alison Crum has taken the step to solve this problem with her books. In it, she covers all the major topics in vivid detail, from how to hold the viol to proper fingering. Her detailed analysis covers the information you would have to find in a number of other books, written in Elizabethan English.
If you are considering learning to play the Viol and have a budget to consider, I recommend her books to train yourself and save a pretty penny!

Viol redivivus
By Paul George
There need to be more books like this one, especially for other string instruments, including cello, violin, dulcimer.... The presentation of information is well organized and well written, but not quite so well indexed. And the music notation of the examples and exercises deserves a mention for its exemplary clarity, quite above what most of our computerized "music notation" software produces these days. The authors' assumption that users of this book will have easy access to the companion volumes of practice pieces does not hold for U.S. buyers, as those latter volumes are not readily available outside Britain. It would have been better to place several supplementary practice pieces at the end of this present volume. Aside from this cavil, this book is a model of music tutorial via the written word, and it is well worth the price. There is nothing else that comes close to providing the content of this book.

A tour de force
By Amazon Customer
Alison has clearly put in huge amounts of time distilling the essential elements of playing the viol, and it shows. This book is a great resource for any viol player looking for direction on how to think about the various aspects one's playing. Even for students with teachers, it's always useful to hear an alternate way of doing things, or another way of describing what one already does.
